Most importantly, my cats love it. One cat is a Persian and she gets frustrated with most water dishes as her face is too flat to get into most of them. She either ends up covered in water or thirsty. This one is wide and shallow enough that she can drink easily from it - AND it refills!
We got both the 1.5 and the 3.0 liter units...and have been using them for two months now, and are very pleased so far.
They are very nice looking, and easy to clean & replenish. I have verified with the company that they are BPA-free; I have also asked a follow-up question as to whether they contain Microban (which I'd prefer to avoid exposing my pets to), and once I get an answer, I will post that as well with an edit. (The previous model we had did contain Microban...the manufacturer actually claimed it as a beneficial feature...but I've read enough about the chemical to make me wary about allowing it to come in contact with our pets' food and water).
The science is pretty smart, too: the bottle can be opened from the bottom for easy cleaning, and the seal does not need to be airtight, since the seam is immersed in the water (if it were at the top, then there would be a problem, but they obviously thought that through!)
This little guy is perfect! The dispenser has a lid on it that comes off and I can stick my whole hand in their and make sure Pepper the cat is drinking clean water. If I fill it, it will last two weeks but I like to clean it out each week to make sure it is fresh and not collecting germs.
If you need a water dispenser and have one cat, this is the one to get.
One problem I have with it is how hard it is to snap the lid on. By lid I mean the part that snaps onto the bottom of jug that also contains the water distribution system that prevents overflow. It's very difficult to secure the lid on the water container and to even tell if it is secure. I find it easier to attempt to pour water into the hole that distributes water instead of hassling to take the lid on and off.
I am absolutely positive there are more user friendly water dispensers on the market. But this is good for the cheap price point.
Overall, though, for the price, there really isn't any better option out there. It's not perfect, but for 4 bucks, I'm very happy.
I've been using it with my two cats for about 8 months and have not had any problems thus far. The tank is large enough to last more than a week with regular use (although the cats do steal sips from any water glasses that are left out). I had worried about mildew with a tank of stagnate water, but that hasn't been an issue at all. The refill process is simple and the entire base comes off the tank if you do need to get a sponge in there to clean it.
A slight word of caution, if you have a super scaredy cat. My cats have been great about using the waterer, but they do seem nervous when it belches. The mechanism is a lot like an office water cooler that lets out water in big glugs and take in air the same way. It hasn't been a problem yet, but the cats do flinch occasionally. Just something to think about and at this price you can afford to try it out.
This self filling water dish fits the bill perfectly! It's large enough to hold weeks worth of water and the technological marvel of the bubbler keeps it from overflowing.
When I first received it, I felt like I was going to break the top when I tried prying it off to fill the container so I ended up just filling it through the bubbler opening. It worked perfectly fine. I felt adventurous the second time I needed to fill it so I pried the lid off. It took a little doing to pull off and put back on, but it works without leaking so far. I think my first idea of filling through the bubbler opening is actually easier though.
All in all, this is a great water dish!
