Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Van Cleave writes books designed to show students that science is fun, and this latest collection does just that. The book recyles activities selected from her "Science for Every Kid" and "Spectacular Science Projects" series and adds 40 new ones. They are organized by field: astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics; the purpose, materials needed, procedure, results, and an explanation are included for each demonstration. The author writes in a clear, easy-to-understand style. Terms that are defined in the glossary appear in bold type. Cautions are noted in italics. A black-and-white diagram of the setup accompanies each project. The step-by-step procedural approach and the inclusion of a statement of what the results should be make these demonstrations rather than experiments. Nonetheless, they are interesting and most of them can be done by youngsters at home. The book will be especially useful to teachers looking for ideas that can be adapted as hands-on activities.

Looking for simple experiments which are always successful? Janice VanCleave's books provide just that approach. And 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre and Incredible Experiments adds to her large collection of published experiments. The title is misleading as the experiments are not very unusual. But the experiments are simple and most use readily-available materials. Good scientific explanations accompany each experiment. The book would benefit by some emphasis on the inquiry-approach to science and encouraging (rather than discouraging) changing variables during the experiments...The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.

I had to purchase this as required for a homeschooling program we are doing. After getting it and looking at the experiments it looks like something I will continue to use in our homeschool. The experiments are laid out well and have good explinations.

My children are having a great time learning and doing experiments. I'm not a science person so this helps me out a lot. They are simple but very creative in the experiments. Would recommend this book for everyone.

We use this book with Classical Conversations and I absolutely love it. The Experiments are easy to understand and uses materials that are around the house are at least easy to find. It follows the scientific method, What is the purpose, what are your materials, work the procedure, show the results, it even explains why the experiment works instead of leaving you hanging on doing something from a Pinterest fail. I highly recommend any of Janice VanCleave's Science books and experiments.

These are fun demonstrations, but calling them experiments is a little misleading. Neither of my kids were interested in this book, though they love most books with experiments and scientific demonstrations. Not engaging.

Simple, basic experiments that help me and my children start discussing more complex scientific concepts. I love that most of the experiments use common things I can find around my house and don't take a lot of time to perform, but still leave an impression and help our scientific discussions.

We use this for our Homeschool co-op and it has great (and easy) experiments. Not ALL of them come out like they are supposed to, but I can't rule out operator error in this. I would recommend it to any Homeschooler or anyone who has a kid that's into science.
