Editorial Reviews

2008 release containing a rare 1964 Vancouver concert by the Stan Getz Quartet with Gary Burton for the first time ever on CD. As a bonus, we have added two more very rare performances, Getz's quartet set at Newport '61 (these are Scott LaFaro's last recordings!) and two tracks taped at the Apollo Theatre with an orchestra led by Getz and featuring Zoot Sims and Gerry Mulligan. 12 tracks. Gambit.

There are literally dozens and dozens of Stan Getz recordings available, but it's my personal opinion that Getz did some of his best playing with the quartet captured on this CD. The group was together for about three years, and I know of only four legitimate (not bootleg) recordings of Stan Getz with Gary Burton, and this is one of them. The studio album, "Nobody Else But Me" is excellent, and my favorite of the three live recordings is "Getz-Au-Go-Go", a true classic album. The other two live albums, "The Paris Concert" and this one recorded for a radio program in Canada are both very good, just not up to the Au-Go-Go in quality of recording or performance.

All that being said however, any recording of this classic quartet is welcome, and while the quartet with Burton comprises only 7 of the tracks on this CD, I still recommended it to any Getz/Burton fan. But definitely start with "Getz-Au-Go-Go" and work your way through the other three recordings if you're just discovering the recorded performances of this terrific quartet.
