If you are a fan of Brasilian female singers, the self titled CD from Vanessa da Mata is a MUST! In Brasil, critics are calling her "the new Marisa Monte" and "a great new hope for MPB music".
The comparison to Marisa is partly because of Vanessa's incredible talent as a composer. She was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2000 for a song she wrote for Maria Bathania. She has also written songs for Milton Nacimento and Daniela Mercury.
Now that she is performing her owns songs we are the lucky ones. Her voice reminds some of Gal Costa, the CD is produced by the great Jacques Morelenbaum and the musicians are amazing.
This CD has so many great songs, but take special note of the beautiful "Case-se Comigo", the ecclectic "Ano de 1890" and the great pop samba "Nao Me Deixa So". Vanessa's CD is as strong and consitant as "Rose e Charcol", Marisa Monte's best work to date. I am a big fan of Brasilian Divas and Vanessa is now at the top of my list. BUY IT!

My son who lives in Sao Paulo turned me on to her. I bought this album and am hooked. i play it all the time. She has a beautiful voice and a talented band behind her. Soft, easy music.
