Vanguard advertises this product as waterproof and fog-proof. Well, I put that claim to the test, sighting in a rifle on a 38 degree day during torrential downpour and it passed with flying colors. The optics are crisp and clear. At 100 yards holes in the damp, black paper were easily visible. At 200 I had to aim for the white, there wasn't enough contrast on the black, but once again I could see exactly where I was hitting. I used to prefer a straight eyepiece, but must say that after using this angled one for a couple hours I'm sold on its utility, especially if you want to work from a prone position with a short tripod. Very solid product.

Some nits to pick: The spotting scope does not come with a tripod, but really doesn't work without one. Fortunately I have several so that wasn't a big deal for me, but be prepared to add that to the package. The cover/carrying case is nice in theory, but not so wonderful in reality. The front and back cover are both too large, ostensibly to accommodate multiple models and eyepieces, but in this configuration they fall off constantly. A little Velcro would have been nice. The strap works fine though. I haven't tried using it with my digital camera, I have plenty of telescopic lenses already, but must say that have looked over the process it seems to me that it would be horribly unwieldy doing that, particularly if the subject was moving. Not a feature I plan to make use of.

Surprisingly lightweight considering the size, this is a really nice, functional product. Since I don't care about using it with a camera I'm not adjusting the rating for that feature, but suspect I'd have to downgrade it a bit if that was on my "need to have" list. As a pure spotting scope, however, it's certainly recommended. Good product!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I recently had the opportunity to take this scope out and run it through its paces while zeroing in a long range rifle and trying out some different rifle loads at varying distances and I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with this product. And here are my "Top Ten" reasons why:

1. This scope is very lightweight and was easy to carry and handle throughout the entire day.

2. It appears to be very durable and has a rubber "body armor" of sorts around it to protect it in case it gets drop or banged around. Now I was NOT going to intentionally start dropping this scope of slam it into anything to test out that feature, so I will take the manufacturers word on it until proven otherwise.

3. The manufacturer claims that it is also waterproof and fog-proof, now I don't know how it would hold up to an intentional soaking but when I used it we had a combination of rain and snow going at the time and it did get wet from the falling rain/snow and it was called out. I had no problems whatsoever because of the moisture or cold so I would have to say that the manufacturers claims on this are correct.

4. The dual focus tuning system was a definite plus and although it took me a minute to get the hang of it I really liked that particular feature. It allowed me to stay focused better on objects as they moved through various ranges. I didn't get the opportunity to try it with a wild animal as they, unlike me, were smart enough to get out of the bad weather and seek shelter somewhere. Me, I got soaking wet, a few sniffles, and a slight chill. On the plus side my shots were all pretty much dead-on and I had a good time.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've been really impressed by how nicely this scope works. It feels very sturdy and well made in my hands, and yet it is a lot lighter than I was expecting it to be as well. The carrying straps are a great addition to make it easy to get it around with you as needed.

When we had some interesting things going on in the sky recently, I even took it out at night to see if it could do the job of a very basic telescope. I just braced it on the edge of a railing rather than fixing it to something so that it would be easy to move it around and used it to take a look at Venus, Jupiter, and our moon. It's obviously not on the level of a dedicated telescope by any means. Still, it didn't do badly at all as something I could just easily grab and take a quick look with.

I'll be using more later in the season, but the testing I've done with it has definitely convinced me that the company did a good job making it and it'd be a great scope for just about anyone. You obviously have to be planning to get a fair bit of use from a scope to justify the price point, but quality always costs money, especially when you're buying something that has delicate parts that have to be constructed absolutely perfectly like the lenses in a scope.
