I paid over $200 for this tripod and it has seen mild and always well cared for use. Until the other day, I would have given this a 5 star review but I had it set up in my garage holding a Canon 7D and 60mm macro. The conditions could have been any better for a tripod.. flat, level, cement floor - indoors, no wind - the rubber feet had great grip - and it wasn't unbalanced or precariously positioned... yet when I was just far enough away to not be able to catch it in time, it collapsed to the floor, lens first. Somewhat fortunately, Canon makes robust gear but the lens is definitely damaged and will never be the same and there is damage to the body of the camera.
The reason? The quick release locks on the leg extensions apparently (and inconspicuously) loosed themselves over time to the point where the "locked" position was just tight enough to give me a chance to walk away. The worst part is they need tools to be tightened. If this happened on a trip or during an event, I would be out of luck. If this is out of convenience, I'd rather be inconvenienced when setting up my tripod and know my gear will be held.
I don't give one star reviews lightly, especially on something that is otherwise as good as this one is, but if I can't trust the product to do the one thing it is supposed to do - especially with so much invested in what it holds - then it is of no use to me.
Maybe I am expecting too much and should just carry tools in my camera bag? That'd be disappointing as well but at least my gear will stand a better chance of not being destroyed.
Photography is my favorite hobby and I want to do it all: macro, landscape, wildlife, portrait, and especially the night sky so having a sturdy tripod is very important. However, spending money on a tripod just isn't as glamorous as buying a new lens, so I wasn't about to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on one. I spent a lot of time reading reviews about the Vanguard on Amazon and decided to give this one a try.
I belong so several photography groups, so go on outings almost every weekend. The tripod gets a lot of use! I guess it might be heavier than some of the top brand models, but I'm used to packing it on hikes. (I'll inject that I'm a short, little old lady!) This poor tripod has been abused by sand, salt water, snow, mud, dust, etc. I have not treated it gentle or kind, but it hasn't let me down. Literally. My tripod doubles as a walking stick through creeks and rocky trails.
The ball head still moves smoothly. In the past year, the little orange release button has been hard to push so releasing the camera has become challenging. I don't think it's a defect, it happened after a trip to the beach so it's probably sand. It groans a little when I put my full-frame w/150-600mm on it. I use the 2 second delay or the remote to keep shake at a minimum, if the subject demands it. Mostly, when using the 150-600mm, I'm panning and the tripod just helps support the weight.
So, after 3 years of heavy use and abuse, it's still doing it's job. I'm sure I'll have to replace it eventually and unless I win the lottery I will replace it with the same model.
The tripod itself didn't seemed pretty good, I did not use it in the field, but I did think it was well built and could have worked well. After reading other reviews, I did decide to just return the entire thing. Too bad, I was really hoping to use this tripod, perhaps with another head?
Returning it.

Lite enough to walk around with. Very good for macro or studio.

I would write a whole scathing review about this tripod except it's not even worth that much effort. Save yourself time and money and go with anything BUT an Alta Pro. I've since bought a Manfrotto BeFree Advanced and could not be happier. It's about the same price and will serve you MUCH better. I do miss the 90 degree arm that this tripod has but that's exactly what stopped working both times. You would think such a heavy tripod would be durable but believe me it's a hoax.

The legs are sturdy. I have rarely had to set down more than one section of the legs. It will get quite tall if you put down both sets. The centre post also has a spot to attach a sandbag if you need to add stability.
For the price, it has a lot of good features. Very happy with this purchase.
