This story came highly recommended to me by a trusted friend and one of my favorite bloggers and I am SO grateful to her (thank you Aestas!)! Vanguard by CJ Markusfeld is one of my new all-time favorites! It is a love story unlike any I've read, and I attribute this to not only the author's creativity in developing a wonderful storyline, but her writing style and ability as well. I am truly blown away here and suffering a very big book hangover right now. In the most perfect way.
This is the love story between Sophie and Michael, two individuals who are brilliant, caring, philanthropic and beautiful and yet when they first meet they are like oil and water. However we do learn how their relationship evolves over a decade until we get to the present, which is where the majority of the book takes place. Sophie and Michael experience things no one should ever have to witness and yet they come out stronger on the other side. I cannot stress enough though, that this is a true love story. It's not erotic; it's not panty-dropping. But the emotions you experience throughout the journey are incredible. Laughter, tears, anger, suspense (just a little), maybe frustration at times, it's all there and it's that combination of feelings that makes Vanguard the wonderfully beautiful story it is.
I was pulled in from the very beginning. Literally, I became addicted to this story and I will admit to opening the Kindle app on my phone (which I very rarely do) out of desperation in public just because i HAD to know more but taking out my Kindle would have been inappropriate. I could not stop thinking about Sophie and Michael's story. I read it in less than 48 hours; it was just that good. The writing is outstanding; this author clearly did a lot of research down to the finest details. So much so that I truly believed that the GYL and the RCI really exist in our world and was almost sorry to find out they are fictional (although I know there are similar organizations that are real). I also really enjoyed getting to know the secondary characters and loved them as much as I did Sophie and Michael. Anjali and Will are wonderful, their banter added levity to some otherwise dark situations. And Carter is another character I fell in love with. As Michael's best friend I would have loved to get to know him even more, as he is an amazing human being.
I could go on and on about how much I love this story, but really the bottom line is you must experience it for yourself to really understand what I'm talking about. You need to personally feel all the different emotions along the way, knowing at the end you'll walk away with a smile on your face and a feeling of joy in your heart.
Thank you CJ Markusfeld for this absolutely incredible love story. You've got me as a fan for life now, and I can't wait to see what you've got coming next.
I loved this book. It is not my normal read, somewhat historical romance, but in the present time....if that makes sense.
It was a slow start as I felt the author really wanted us to form a connection to Sophie and Michael. They had certain priorities in their lives, school and careers that had them traveling, which made them compatible in the fact that neither one of them was ready to settle down until they achieved their goals.
Basically, Sophie is involved in a coalition to rescue or at least care for refugees in foreign nations. When Michael leaves to help, Sophie is left behind in NY, receiving texts from him everyday. Suddenly, the texts stop. Ugh.....this is where the tension began and the anxious moments because with that prologue to the book, things didn't look good for Michael.
After many months, Sophie is finally able to get together her network of people and information and travels to where she hopes Michael is being held. I loved the anxiety! Seriously loved it! There was so much going on.....an outbreak of a virus, a nasty leader who needed to be manipulated, and just the uncertainty of what could or would happen.
Some people have commented that the relationship between Michael and Sophie was a little informal, but I think that was just the type of people they were.....they declared their love to each other and then spent a lot of time apart during their life. But they knew.....yep, they knew they belonged together.
If you are looking for a different kind of story than the usual romance out there, read this book! I will not forget it for its originality alone.
WHOA WHOA – this is a MUST READ you guys!
The story is about Michael, a Baltic-born American doctor who disappeared after joining the resistance in the Soviet Republic and Sophie (a refugee aid) aka Michael’s former lover who always believed that Michael alive and so she is determined to embarks on a very dangerous mission to find him.
I am a sucker for military war love story and this book did it for me. It is pretty much a modern-day war love story. The story is so intense with lots of twists and turns. I literally could not put it down because I was too anxious to know if Sophie find Michael and what happen when they found each other and then how they cope with the whole ordeal. There were some part I thought I am going to have a stroke especially when Sophie get marked (you have to read to know what ‘marked’ means L :) - I cried.
The love portrayed between Sophie and Michael was sweet, sexy, and swoon worthy especially when he calls her mana mila….GEEZE !!!. I enjoyed the banter between the two and their interactions. I mentioned before that this book is about modern-war but this is definitely a love story and CJ Markusfeld has the right balance there. This book is beautifully written!
I obviously did not pay attention in Geography class because as soon as I was done with the book I was googling Orlisia so I can visit (I love to travel). Could not find it… HAH!!!
Three words for this book UNIQUE, INTENSE, and EPIC love story! Get a copy everyone!!!!
