Review
"Five stars"Reviewed by Lucinda E Clarke for Readers' Favoritereadersfavorite.com In the back of his book Vanished?, author Christer Tholin states that he always wanted to write a Swedish drama, and he's done just that. I chose Vanished? by Christer Tholin to review because I enjoy stories set in Sweden and its neighbouring countries, and often watch them on television. This book did not disappoint, although it could be described as a cosy mystery. While there was a crime to solve, the hero, Martin, is sensible and does not act out of character. He is a lawyer based in Berlin and does not morph into a Rambo character, but correctly and realistically leaves the case to the people he's hired to solve it. The characterisation is excellent, I grew to like all of them and could identify with them. This is a down to earth story, both believable and entertaining, and I read it in one sitting. It flows from beginning to end, has been translated into correct English, and I think is worth every one of the five stars. case.

About the Author
Having grown up in the North of Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, I studied biology and after that worked for 25 years in the pharmaceutical iindustry which led me to live in several European countries. Today, I live together with my family in Stockholm, Sweden, our home of choice since many years back. I run my own company as a management consultant. Already for ages I have been a great fan of crime stories and I read many of the Swedish crime series. Therefore, I had the desire to write my own crime story with my characters acting in Sweden. Already for a while I had a first idea for the plot, but only in 2015 I got the opportunity to take the time in order to make it come true. So here it is - my first book: "Vanished?"

Scandinavian crime novels intrigue me, and I've read dozens of them now. Christer Tholin's story advances an interesting plot with engaging characters and entertaining situations. I found Tholin's dialogue a bit silly however. Several times his characters acted and spoke more like teenagers than mature adults facing life and death situations. As the main character was being questioned by a private detective, he blushed when asked if he and a missing woman (he had just recently met) were having a relationship. Another time, just after barely exiting an exploding building, the private detective's female co-worker nicknames him 'Splosion Man. She also blushes and giggles at (in my opinion) inappropriate times. Overall, however, I enjoyed the tale.

Vanished by Christer Tholin
Recently divorced German attorney Martin travels to Sweden for a brief respite from his law practice in hopes the vacation will help him recover emotionally from the separation from his now ex-wife and child. Upon arrival in the general area of the vacation house he has rented, he becomes lost and stops to ask for directions, which immediately characterizes him as a male secure in his manhood. Martin meets an attractive women who, it turns out, is a close neighbor. After settling in, he drives to town for provisions and runs into the neighbor, Liv, again. They enjoy a conversation and, in the end, she invites him for coffee the following day. When he shows up the next day, Liv has disappeared. It appears from the premises that a struggle has taken place. After further examination of the house, Martin reports the disappearance to the police who seem little inclined to look into the matter. Thereafter begins an unexpected journey into a complicated scenario for Martin who takes on the search for the missing woman. His inability to speak Swedish causes Martin to have to resort to hiring an investigative firm, which assigns an investigator, Lars and a young assistant, Elin, who soon becomes Lars’ sidekick. Together, Martin, Lars, and Elin proceed to use their intellect, the Internet, and good old footwork to get to the bottom of the mystery which is full of complications the reader would not anticipate.
This first novel is well-plotted with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. The main characters are well developed. Since I’ve been to Sweden, I enjoyed reading Tholin’s description of the setting, which, to my mind was accurate. Also, I learned a lot about what research is available on the Internet to assist in an investigation such as this. Christer Tholin is off to a good start with this detective series. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys Swedish mysteries. I look forward to reading the next one.

This is a story about a man named Martin who takes a holiday in Sweden and meet a beautiful woman named Liv. When he comes to see her the next day, he finds that she has mysteriously vanished with signs of a struggle in her house.
This was an excellent crime mystery that was a page turner. I really enjoyed reading it! I loved the descriptions of Sweden. The story really grabbed me and the ending was a big surprise. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good mystery.

Martin was on his first trip to Sweden since his divorce and separation from his daughter. On the first day, he meets a beautiful woman named Liv. The next day, when they agree to meet, she vanishes.
This seemed interesting to me. The character ruminates a lot, often thinking thoughts out loud, which was not bad, but it just didn’t make for very interesting reading. The guy didn’t really strike me as the detective type to be honest. In fact, he goes through the missing case like checking off groceries—remedial and ordinary. The writing was okay, but not too engaging. As you read on, the story gets a little more complicated and judicial.
An okay read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It had an exciting, complex plot and was steeped in all things Swedish, which I love. Great characters, too! I stayed up quite late two nights in a row, which is quite something for someone who lives on a farm and has critters waiting to be fed early in the morning. Christer Tholin is very receptive to personal emails and loves suggestions! I appreciate an author who is still accessible and who seems like a genuinely nice guy!

I liked this book a lot. There was plenty of action and the characters were likeable. Part two of the book was a tad predictable but that was ok. The one criticism I have was that the private eye characters were less fleshed out than Martin and Liv. I would have expected the characters that are part of the series to be the ones that hook the reader. This book was also a good value. Often cheaper ebooks employ poorer quality writing but I didn't find this to be the case here.

I received this book as an Arc from the author and I’m writing a review because I honestly loved it. It’s my first book by this author and I’m finding it very interesting. I recommend it for a light read. The descriptions of Sweden and Germany add to it.

For a first novel, I say well done Mr. Tholin. Many twists and turns keep the reader interested. I especially enjoyed the scene descriptions of Sweden which left me feeling as I was making this journey with the main character, Martin. Unique story line and good character development. Looking forward to reading more from this emerging author.

I had not come across Christer Tholin before but liked the sound of his book. This is about Martin, a German Solicitor, taking a much needed break in Sweden. He meets Liv who, he likes instantly - but the next day, she disappears. What follows is an action packed story , involving some amusing other characters, mystery and a lot of tense moments.
I hope he writes another, very soon. I will look out for it.

My first Swedish Crime novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2017Verified Purchase
Having never read this kind of genre before I began with an open mind, however, it did become difficult to get into the story as many sentences did not need to be there and did not help the story in any way. Skip past all that and there is a really good, strong story within it that kept me interested. There are core characters who we follow within the novel and Elin became the most dominant one which I'm a little unsure of as surely, Martin should be the main focus? If you can ignore the pointless sentences, and get down to the nitty gritty of the story then it's a good read.

Badly written and translated with no suspense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2018Verified Purchase
I have never written a review on here before but as a lover of crime novels and a translator, I was so appalled by this book that I felt I had to say something... First of all, the translation is shocking, far too close to the German original, including plenty of proverbs and idioms that make zero sense in English. The story itself is pedestrian and predictable and without any tension at all. The main character is so lame and limp that the description of the love-making that eventually happens after plenty of dithering is just weird and gross. A truly bad book when there are so many excellent, nuanced, exciting and well-written crime novels out there.
