About the Author

Richard Austin Freeman (1862–1943) was a British writer of detective stories, mostly featuring the medico-legal forensic investigator Dr. Thorndyke. He claimed to have invented the inverted detective story (a crime fiction in which the commission of the crime is described at the beginning, usually including the identity of the perpetrator, with the story then describing the detective's attempt to solve the mystery). Freeman used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeon in his novels.

Parts of a body are found in various places in England. A man has vanished. Is there any connection between the two?

As the story progresses, one wants to tell the omniscient scientist collecting data that he should check the DNA. But. of course, DNA was unknown at the time. Instead, he uses the technology of the day and brilliantly solves the mystery.

Interesting too is that people really haven't changed much since this was written, only customs.

I agree with the previous reviewers. It was an interesting book, and I'm glad I read it.

This is the third time I have tried to post a review for this wonderful book. I could hardly put it down. It is a wonderful period fiction piece. A mystery that keeps you turning the pages and beautifully written. I loved it!

I downloaded this book to see how the Kindle app worked on my iTouch. Didn't expect much for a free book. First of all, I'm thrilled with the Kindle app and how it has worked, but found myself totally engrossed in this delightful read. As one reviewer has commented, I too, loved the "no sex, no violence, no swearing" (or something like that) aspect of this book. It is informative to read the customs of those days and period pieces typically help me remember how very far our technology has progressed in such a short time.

I would gladly read more writings by this author.

I like mysteries. As mysteries go this was entertaining. Of course, it was a little dated and politically incorrect in so many places. However, none of that bothers me. PC chabges with time.

I thought there were two reviews already left for this book. I was one of them! This is a great read and I had trouble putting it down. A good period mystery and it has me searching the out of copyright titles for similar gems. Thank you Amazon Kindle!

This book is a prime example of Austin Freeman's mysteries. Some very human characters, warmth and good fellowship among the Good People, on occasion, staid romantic love, and the overarching Genius, who through study of empirical evidence by scientific laboratory methods and application of strictly logical reasoning penetrates to the core of a problem, usually, murder. Much of the book details application of these methods to the particular case of a man who vanishes leaving behind a misbegotten Will and heirs subject to accusations of murder should his fate not become known. In time, bones are found which are taken to be his and the future of one of the heir's daughters (through the danger to her father) is in question. As romantic interest, there are the physician student of Freeman's scientific hero and the aforementioned daughter of the heir. Will this early pioneer forensic scientist discover the fate of the missing man thus saving the young couple's love match and the hoped-for-wife's father.
Those who are impatient at reasoned examination of evidence and like the sound of gunfire and the smack of fist against jaw, the book is likely to be a dull one. For the more patient reader, it can be quite entertaining.

A doctor who is temporarily helping out another doctor in his practice gets pulled into a mystery. One of his patients and his daughter are related to a man who vanished two years earlier. Besides the fact that the man is not legally dead, there are other complications with the will and as a result, the man and his daughter are penniless. The doctor is also friends with Dr. John Thorndyke--who does work with forensic science. Dr. Thorndyke and his assistant help unravel the whole difficult truth of the matter using some unique methods. The answer to the vanishing man was a very clever one, I thought.

Enjoyable to read. Has some things about Egyptology. A little romance. Very worthwhile to read. (and it's free on Kindle)

It is always a pleasure to read one of Freemans books. It is truly lie reading an old time mystery with a nice even pace, yet constantly keeps the readers attention. This is just the ticket for spending those cold winter evenings in your favorite chair. Forget TV, rather, feed your brain with this delightful book.
