Editorial Reviews

American Angel delivers a staggering release powered by incomparable musicianship, distinctive vocals, and the dynamism of Rocco Fury. Vanity contains 13 tracks of well encompassed hard rock music intertwined with huge hooks, melodies and unforgettable choruses. Vanity s story delivers a look back at when music was driven by the image but with today s more modern style. American Angel rose to fame in 1989, with their self titled debut, after signing with Grudge/BMG. The hit single How Can I Miss You was featured on MTV and the video placed into heavy rotation. After a 15 year hiatus, the driving force behind American Angel has returned with a vengeance; proving once again what music is all about. American Angel, to this day has a tremendous fan base thus making Vanity a highly anticipated release nationwide. The band will be embarking on a North American tour in support of Vanity this summer.

It took 15 years and an entirely new cast of supporting musicians, but singer Rocco Fury brought American Angel back to life in 2007 for a new album called Vanity.

It's always interesting to hear what these 80's rockers come up with when they return to the music scene. Some artists adapt to the changing musical climate (and let's face it, advancing age) quite well (Great White, Tesla, and Whitesnake come to mind), while others stumble a bit (Dokken, White Lion). Fury and his new American Angel try to find a good mix of the old hard rock energy with a polished, more mature approach, and the results are mixed. Vanity is a perfectly decent melodic rock album, but it never seems as wild and fun as an 80's rock album. There are a couple of tracks that stand out (In Perfection and Don't Wait Up), but for the most part the album never really reaches out and grabs you. Again, it's a perfectly decent rock album, but nothing really exceptional.

I know this is Fury's band, but every time I hear his voice I can't help but wish he'd sign on with some hotshot guitar virtuoso or up and coming power metal band. He's got this Dio/Johnny Gioelli thing going on that would translate really well to that kind of music.

If you were a fan of American Angel back in the hair metal glory days, Vanity will not disappoint. If you're looking for something really memorable, this probably isn't it.

I bought this album, with some trepidation because I have been listening to their original album since '90 and was afraid that they would sound so totally different from what I enjoyed, that I would start to not like AA anymore. Well, their sound is different, but no more different than other groups that I follow, who change their sound every couple of albums. Most groups refine and mature their music as they progress and, IMHO, this album is just that and stylistically it could have been released in '93 (their second and last album of original music prior to Vanity was released in '92) and it would have fit right into their mix. There were complaints on AA's website about the new sound, I think that's more to do with only having the two albums to listen to for so long that people get a fixed "definition" of how a band should sound (sort of like when the new Star Wars trilogy came out after a long hiatus between the new and the old and how the SW fans hated the new trilogy because of how different it was), while had this album been released back in '93, I don't think anyone would have uttered a discouraging word. Granted, Vanity could not have been released in '93 as it was not written until recently, I am only saying that I find it fits in with their earlier style and is not the radical departure some have made it out to be. Compared to the debut album (I don't have the second as of writing this), this is a more mature (NOT in the NC-17 sense) and refined album than the debut album.Read more ›
