This is one exciting game, people. I haven't had this much fun playing a game in a while. It is raw, arcadey, action-packed blasting fun. From start to finish, there isn't a single moment where you feel underwhelmed, bored, or out of the fight. I'll run through my three points for this game.
ENVIRONMENTS (5 Stars): this game is beautifully done. It takes place in a massive, country-sized space station. I honestly can't find one flaw in the visual presentation of this game. It's astounding and really immerses you in the environment. The music and sound are awesome. Great techno rock tunes pulse during the games, and the sound effects are booming and robust. For this type of action-arcade experience, there is not a single flaw to be found. You shouldn't have one moment where the environments disconnect you from the game experience. Even the cutscenes are impressive.
GAMEPLAY (5 stars): I can't give a game 5 stars of gameplay unless it really deserves it. The HUD is minimal, providing you only with the information you absolutely need to play. Health is taken care of in a different way, without a meter or measurement; it's done well and keeps you in the game. The controls are tight and easy. There aren't a lot of special moves and such in the game, but the controls allow you to put the available tactics together easily. The combat flows buttery smooth and the controller setup is intuitive. You won't hit the wrong button by mistake or botch a move because of complicated controller setup.
The "suit" worn by the hero is fantastic; the abilities it bestows aren't terribly unique but they are implemented perfectly and give a whole new dimension to action shooting. In a nutshell: it's a blast to play!
DESIGN (4 stars): The game isn't very long, coming in with 5 total chapters and maybe 5 missions for each chapter. It took me about 2-3 hours per chapter, about 12 hours to finish the game. It's unfortunately short. The nonstop action and campy, old-school sci-fi story keeps you going and makes the short game packed with fun. I could have easily gone for another 10+ hours. If the game was less action-packed, it wouldn't be worth the play.
There are five challenge levels that are unlocked as you progress, and these one-off, survival modes are a lot of fun to play. I would have liked to see more of them, or some other modes to explore the awesomeness of this game's action.
The levels, weapons, and interaction of characters with the environment is perfect for this type of game. It's largely a set-piece game: you can kinda guess when the fights are coming. The anticipation is fun, because there's a large variety of enemy bosses and the AI is actually challenging! They take cover, lay down fire, and make use of different weapons.
The story is cool, but far from intriguing or mysterious. There's definitely a couple of twists, but not anything that'll blow your mind. It leaves the door open for a sequel or DLC (which I hope they take advantage of!). The characters in the game aren't developed--but given the action of this game, it isn't necessary.
OVERALL (5 Stars): the basic story, simple characters, and campy feel take a back seat (and sometimes even augment) the fast-paced, pulse-pounding action in this game. It's a blast to play and hard to put down. The controls and in-game response is fantastic. There's nothing to knock for visual or audio quality--top notch! The game, because it's so cool, should have been a lot longer; there also could have been more challenge modes. There's a lot of room for DLC here. This game is a gem with a fun, old-school arcade feel to it.
Pros:
+ Graphics and art direction combine stylized art direction with a futuristic realism to arrive at a slick medium
+ Anime-like storyline. Play this with Japanese voices and English subtitles, imagine that it's hand-drawn or cel-shaded 3D, and you can easily see how this could be an anime that you would watch
+ Option to use the superior Japanese voice-overs
+ Refined, polished, and streamlined gameplay that is free of needless exploration or puzzle-solving
+ The innovations: Boosting and ARS mode (slow-mo)
+ Light RPG elements: upgrade your weapons by picking up the same weapon in the field while your ammo is maxed
Cons:
+ Life-bars over enemies take away the immersiveness of the battle and instead makes you aware that you are playing a video game. You hence look for your aiming reticule to turn red (so that you know you will damage the enemy) instead of aiming at your enemy. Some people like bars and meters all over the screen; I do not.
+ Uniform upward recoil. When you shoot your weapon, the recoil causes your aim to go up. However, it simply does that. It doesn't shake left, right or down. It continues going straight up. This is not realistic, and it annoyed me at first; however, as I continued through the game, I anticipated this and would sometimes aim below a target and then shoot, for I knew the crosshairs would soon reach my target.
+ Dying incurs a penalty that automatically downgrades your weapons in "Normal" difficulty and above. Why have this penalty? Or better yet, why would I play a difficult section over with my weapons downgraded? After realizing that my weapons were being downgraded upon death, I simply exited the game and loaded a previous check-point. This is an unnecessary penalty that simply makes the user waste time.
+ One-hit deaths. This is arguably necessary because of the rebounding health meter. If you could simply hide all the time, then you could never die. However, it is frustrating to die in the heat of battle because you missed dodging the one-hit-death move from a boss while you were focused on killing one of its minions.
Parting Thoughts:
Yes. This is better than Gears of War. I got bored of GoW and was unimpressed by its graphics. Vanquish is a thrill-ride that must be played. It is sad that games without multiplayer are immediately deemed inferior by the mainstream "'Call of Duty' gamer". I hope that games like this continue to be made. As long as intelligent gamers like us exist, it will be a reality. Thank you for reading this review, and have a great day.

Seller is 5 stars.
The game is 3.
Good game, good game play, not too easy, but very repetitive.
I love game where at some point you drive a car a tank or do something else.
Thanks Sega, just wish more people would realize how great this is. . .
