This is absolutely one of the best tools to access hard drives and at a bargain basement price to boot! This adapter is plug and play when using Windows 7, 8, and 10 no new drivers need to be installed. Just hook it up and start transferring files.

I had a hard drive on an old XP Windows computer, and the password had been lost long ago. Trying to crack the password is not an issue with this adapter. I removed the hard drive out of this old laptop computer and hooked this adapter with the provided cables. Once this was done you can read the old drive like any other computer drive thru Windows Explorer. The old drive does not need the newest version of windows to be read. I tested three different hard drives with three different Windows versions and they all were incredibly easy to connect to and read. It takes all of ten minutes to hook up a drive and transfer files to a new computer.

If you need to access old drives or locked computers this is the tool for you. Any file on the old drive can be transferred quickly and easily. Highly recommend this adapter if you need to access new or old 2.5”, 3.5” IDE and SATA hard drives, including most 5.25” CD, DVD or Blue Ray Drives this is for you. Highly recommend!

Killed a working hard drive

I bought this product to help get some files off an old hard drive installed on a PC that my mother had owned before she passed away. The drive was working perfectly fine in the PC it was pulled from. Now that drive will not spin up at all after attaching it to this device.

I hooked the drive up to this adapter. Upon plugging it in to my computer's USB ports, I knew there was trouble. I could see/hear device being detected/undetected repeatedly in device manager. The power cable fit poorly. The adapter would never would read the drive. After trying different USB ports on my PC, I could get Windows to finally see the drive, but it could not see any capacity or information about it. Disk management said there was no drive installed. Shortly after, the drive stopped spinning up. I will try to spin up initially when it gets powered, but spins down after about 30 seconds.

There was nothing special about this drive. It's just a 3.2 GB ATA/IDE from the late 90's. As I said earlier, there was no problem in the computer it was pulled from. Maybe the drive just happened to die when using this. Bad luck happens. So I tried hooking this adapter up to another known-good SATA drive I had. Same issue; Windows could not see it either.

Figured this adapter was a bad unit so I returned it and picked up the Sabrent USB 3.0 adapter also available on Amazon. The drive with my mother's info still won't spin up. However the Sabrent unit was detected immediately on my PC and reads the other SATA drive with no problems.

Don't buy this device if you want to use it to save data. It may do more harm than good

I had an old gateway PC with windows Xp from like 1999 that was no longer turning on.
I realized the power source failed and removed the hard drive before discarding the tower, hoping to somehow transfer my data. I bought this figuring it was worth the $15 to see if I could retrieve any files from the hard drive. It was simple enough to set everything up following the included instructions and this worked just as expected. I was able to retrieve photos and music from the IDE hard drive of a PC that hasn't powered on in years. No drivers were needed for my laptop to recognize the IDE drive, for reference I am running Windows 10.

What great to transfer data from a broken laptop to a new one

When my laptop screen broke and I couldn’t even figure out how to get my data off my C Drive, I googled what to do and figured out that I needed to get this. It was very simple to follow the instructions in a little manual along with an online video tutorial, And I got everything from my broken laptop onto my new one. This Device allows you to connect one device to the other and essentially transfer the information through an extra no hard drive onto your new machine, using your new machine as the command station for what you want to do. I thought it worked great and was simple, even though I’m kind of a dummy when it comes it all this tech stuff. I had to take the hard drive out of the old laptop but I watched a video showing how to detach the motherboard and all that. You need a screwdriver. Anyway, So glad I was able to get all my pictures and my documents off the broken laptop, Thanks to this device.

I had a 10-year-old dell that had the blue screen of death and it could not be booted. I decided it was time to buy a new computer. However I couldn't figure out how to get the data off my old drive. I looked on the Internet and saw a guy using this device. I removed the drive from the old Dell Which was much easier than I would've imagined and hooked it up to this device and was able to easily retrieve my pictures and documents from the old drive. I choose this item as it was not powered by its own USB. It had its own power cord to supply to the drive I didn't want to rely on a USB for the power while it was transferring data. I'm glad I made that choice may have been able to save a few bucks using a USB only device but this unit seems more logical to me and I didn't want to take a chance on corrupting my new dell computer

Inconsistent success

With all this stay at home down time it was finally time to go through every single one of my old hard drives before they were finally cleared out and sent for recycling. This included drives of every sort and type dating back twenty years ago, on both desktop and laptop. Pretty excited to see what what turn up, but ultimately was disappointed by the results. First off, great product in a sense of idea. Before these were out, and part of the reason they sat for so long, you had to take each one and plug it into a main computer and work from there. This treats it more or less like a plug and play usb, with the exception of being careful to turn on certain things in order. At the end of the day, out of seven drives I tried only four worked. I tried again on a friend's unit and he was able to read six of them so one was presumumbly done for. Weird thing though, I gave it another round and this time five units worked with a earlier working unit only being able to intermittently read. So all in all, very inconsistent which is too bad because it's a great tool when it worked.

I purchased this adapter so that I could connect a failing hard drive to my older computer in order to transfer all the data off. During the transfer, even though I had touched nothing, the drive would suddenly disappear, like it had been disconnected from my computer. I would then disconnect everything and reconnect it, assuming that some part was loose. Sometimes, even after all of that, the drive would still not show up as being connected for a few minutes. And after the transfer resumed, the drive would inevitably randomly disappear again. A few years ago, my dad purchased the same product and it worked well for him. So, I asked to borrow his older Vantec SATA to USB 2.0 adapter. I was shocked at how flimsy the new adapter felt compared to the older adapter. I hooked up the failing hard drive to my older computer with the older adapter and it worked just fine; the drive never randomly disappeared from my computer when it was connected with the older adapter.

The first one arrived and would not work.
Replacement one arrived, it worked fine on the first hard drive, but then would not work on the other three hard drives.
When I tried it again on the first hard drive it worked for a bit than stopped working
I tried them one a laptop running windows 7, a different one running 8.1 and one using windows 10

I bought this to use on my 3.5" drive, but I wasnt able to use it. One - the power output was too high for my 2TB WD Caviar Green drive and so smoke started appearing from the HDD while using it. I dont know if I damaged by HDD yet, but the lack of power control is a serious issue with this. MOdern HDD's are quite efficient, so utility of this is questionable without power control.

The cables are also delicate to touch and need to be handled very carefully.

Overall, not an easy experience and not what was expected.
