I purchased the Vantec NBA-200U 7.1 Channel Adapter to enable my Windows 10 laptop to 5.1 sound through my 5.1 analog surround sound speaker system. Although I have only tested the adapter's analog output, it works absolutely great!

It took a little bit of work (probably 30 minutes) to get it set up. Here's how I did it: I first downloaded the updated driver at the Vantec website and installed it (search for "NBA-200U"). Following the installation instructions that appear after extracting and running (as administrator) the "setup.exe" file, I plugged in the adapter to a USB 3.0 port. I plugged my 5.1 speakers into the front of the adapter: green for front, black for rear, orange for sub-woofer/center. When the installation finished, I rebooted the computer. (Make sure you reboot so that the software can finish loading.) Once rebooted, I went into the Windows 10 control panel and ran the sound applet, setting it up for 5.1 sound. Then, I checked the system task bar and found a blue icon with a white swirl. Once I clicked on the icon, a "USB Multi-Channel Audio Device" application started that enabled me to set up all kinds of things, including a mixer, karaoke, and effects. I found that if I set the "System Input" to "2 CH", enabled the "Xear Surround Mix", and set the "Output Mode", "Analog Output", to "6 Speakers", while tweaking the "Output Device" settings (click the speaker icon to enable) to make the rear speakers a bit louder ("+2"), I got great surround sound while playing a stereo recording I had uploaded to YouTube. I listened to all of the speakers while testing to make sure the front, rear, center, and sub-woofer all worked. The volume and mute controls work perfectly.

I bought this for my home theater PC as my current video card with HDMI output would only do 2 channel audio. I started looking at sound cards. I am limited as I only have the low profile slots in the small form factor case I am using. I came upon this. There was nothing said in the description or anywhere that I could see on their website that states there is no 5.1/7.1 via digital out. This is crazy!! Why would you not allow the multi channel out through the digital outs? Why would you not state that you can only get the multi channel out through the analog output. As I have not had much time with this device other than trying to figure out the multi channel output I am unsure of the sound quality. It is now getting ready to hit my trash can.

Probably the same story as many people. My desktop PC had a Logitech 5.1 speaker system (with green, orange, black cables) connected to it. Desktop PC died, and I replaced it with a laptop (a fairly old HP Elitebook 8460p) with only a headphone jack. Got this as it seemed to fit what I needed, and the price was right. And I was correct - I now have 5.1 surround sound from my laptop. A few items of note:

1. It's pretty compact (see photo)
2. It can be connected via USB 2.0 port (I actually have it connected to a USB 2.0 hub) - do not require USB 3.0
3. No drivers needed for my OS (Windows 10 Professional v1903) - Windows 10 automatically loaded the necessary drivers.
4. I initially was not getting any sound from my center channel. I found out that I had to set that up in Windows 10 by running ([Windows key]+R) the mmsys.cpl Control Panel app. From here, I selected my 5.1 speaker set-up and tested everything.

I can't speak to sound decoding accuracy/quality as I am not an audiophile, but movies and MP3s sound perfectly fine to me. Hope this helps!

This device works exactly as advertised...if you know what you are doing. They key here is that this device is NOT a Dolby Digital/DTS Decoder. You need an optical connected device than can decode the uncompressed PCM stream. My use case was simple. I needed optical digital PCM pass through to my Logictech Z906 system for watching movies and listening to music in Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1. Here is the thing. To make this work you just have to a) set the Vantec software to PCM ON - the rest of the settings are analog related and don't mean anything in this case - Then, Windows 10 just sees the device as digital output via USB - nothing to do there. b) You must set whatever client you are using i.e. VLC, PLEX to NOT transcode the audio rather to pass it through. This is a super important step. If you don't do this you will get what sounds like a weird hybrid of stereo/surround that sounds terrible- remember SPDIF is really just two channels of audio - but when you pass PCM the assumption is that your connected device can decode the PCM stream - in this case Dolby, DTS, etc. Once you have made that settings change in your client the next thing is to make sure whatever movie or music file you are playing is in fact encoded for the expected format - playing a two channel AC3 movie or a stereo MP3 is not going to sound like you'd expect - remember, whatever you send to the SDPIF output it is going to expect to be decoded by the connected device. Story short, all you need to do is make sure your computer is outputting PCM (PCM is uncompressed data) and you will be loving your little Vantec device. Side note. I have not used the analog outputs so I can't speak to the sound quality there - but I suspect they'd be kind of ok although I would surmise the A to D converters in a sub $30 DAC are going to be subpar. Compre la tarjeta para sacarle jugo mis bocinas Logitech z506 (adjunto imagen del modelo), y hacer mi vieja Laptop una especie de "Roku", "bluray player", etc. La tarjeta funciona bien, no es difícil usarla y no pierde volumen al usarse pero los drivers incluidos no me funcionaron (utilice los genéricos y funcionan bien). El servicio de envió fue rápido y llego en buenas condiciones.

Si la tarjeta la buscas para un mismo fin que yo, otra opción es un "audio decoder 5.1" donde puedas sacarle el sonido de la tv por cable óptico y conectarlo al decodificador y de ahí lo llevas a las Bocinas Logitech z506, no se que tal funcione esta opción pero podría ser otro camino e incluso esto ayudaría a quien usa un xbox a sacarle mas jugo.

Espero mis comentarios los ayuden.

We have gone completely "mobile" now. We no longer use desktops in-house for any purpose. The cost of mobile computing has dropped extensively, and, often, and equally spec'd mobile option (laptop) will rival that of most desktops both in price and performance. Even when it comes to gaming, the days of being forced to go with a larger / static desktop rig are over, especially with technology advancements in mobile video such as NVIDIA's Max-Q design. However, the one area that lacks on mobile systems is sound. Most systems will not come with any advanced audio-in / audio-out options, aside from standard stereo / headphone jack. Hence, if you want to plug your system into advanced speakers, sound bars, HT systems, etc you will need an external sound option (assuming you want the higher-quality digital sound output). Needless to say, this Vantec solution provides just that at an excellent price. No issues with clipping, and the unit is truly plug & play (Windows 10). Enjoy.

I purchased this with the intent of using it with my Nvidia Shield to connect headphones.
Works right out of the box : just plug in and listen.
Sound quality is impeccable.

The 2 reasons for the subtracted star :
- That annoying blue light is impressively bright, making it annoying anywhere close to a screen. I will have to cover it up with some electric tape as soon as I can find some...
- I don't know if this is due to my headphones, but I cannot adjust the volume while listening on the Nvidia Shield with either the buttons on my headphones or with my TV remote. I have to use the + and - buttons on the dongle. Since I sit on my couch and the dongle is close to my TV, this makes it very impractical.
