I recently swapped out two 750 GB Seagate SATA drives from my HP Mediasmart Servers and replaced them with 2 TB WD Green drives (WD20EADS). I wanted to convert those two Seagate drives into external drives for backup purposes using USB drive enclosures. I had bought several enclosures a while ago, so I had to do the research to figure out which were better these days. My criteria were (1) not expensive (drives are so cheap today that an expensive enclosure sort of defeats the purpose of re-using old drives if you want to be cost-effective since you can just buy a new external drive for not much more than the fancier enclosures); (2) easy to assemble without the stress of thinking you are breaking something or somehow degrading the performance of the drive; (3) it just works (the occasionally elusive ease of the "plug and play" ideal). Also, a personal preference, I wanted a physical on/off switch and not a "touch-sensitive" electronic switch (like that found on the Macally G-S350SU Hi-Speed eSata/USB2.0 External Storage Enclosure for 3.5inch SATA HDD) or no switch. Finally, I also wanted good heat dissipation and vibration control.Read more ›

I highly recommend this enclosure!
Despite what is printed on the outside the box, I confirm that this enclosure can work with the latest SATA 3 (aka SATA 6Gbps) and up to 2TB of HDD. I installed the Hitachi Deskstar 7k3000 3.5 inch 2TB drive with this enclosure.

I had a spare eSataP port on my laptop and wanted to add an external HDD to my overall setup. Please note that there is a subtle difference between eSATAp and eSATA. The eSataP port is able to power up external HDD on its own akin to USB 2.0/3.0. eSata ports however require an external power supply to be provided. This HDD enclosure comes with eSata and USB 2.0 ports and comes with an external power supply.
Some reviewers claimed that their HDD was not provided with sufficient power by the enclosure. I'm glad to report that there is no such situation when you pair this HDD enclosure with the Hitachi HDD I mentioned above.
Here are some important specs from my actual usage of the product:-
The HDD enclosure is as cool as a cucumber!
Most of it is made of metal so heat is conducted away very efficiently.
It is also very silent.
There is minimal vibration from the HDD but it is not great enough to be considered annoying.
The transfer rate is about 1.5GB/Min. This is for data transfers from SATA to SATA.
For data tranfers from USB HDD to this SATA, the rate drops slightly to about 1.1 to 1.2 GB/Min.

This USB + eSATA 3.5in enclosure actually works with 2TB drives (I use it with WD), not just 1.5TB as specified in the description. It's a slim enclosure, and very simple to assemble, comes with both USB and eSATA cables (and a sata bracket).
The power adapter is unusually large, though, almost enormous in size.
Other than that, it's a solid and well built enclosure.

It doesn't work on all computers, most devices won't recognize the hard drive, and it has a very cheap build. I regret buying this enclosurePublished 20 days ago by Regis
Much faster than a USB 2.0 external case but only half as fast as a Vantec NexStar DX external case.Published 21 days ago by Wendell R. Breland
