Variant Lost: A Paranormal Romance (The Evelyn Maynard Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
When I receive a scholarship to Bradford Hills Institute, I'm determined to make a fresh start. The exclusive school is world-renowned for educating and training Variants - the 18% of the population fortunate enough to have superhuman abilities. As a human, I'm lucky to be admitted.
I am so done with fake identities, running and lying but once again I find myself surrounded by secrets.
Some I've been keeping my whole life.
Some have been kept from me.
Some I find myself dragged into...
Ethan, Josh, Tyler and Alec have some of the rarest Variant abilities I've ever seen. They fascinate, intrigue and attract me, but is it their abilities, their own secrets or something more that I can't seem to stay away from? The secrets they keep could drag me deep into their dangerous and exciting world - a place I'm not sure I want to be.
And the answers I find could get us all killed.
If you enjoy books by Ilona Andrews, Jennifer L Armentrout, and KF Breene you'll love the rich world and complex characters in Variant Lost!
★★★★★ "This is just an amazing story with characters that felt like real people."

This book is all the things I love about paranormal romance wrapped up in one deliciously unique concept. The depth of the story combined with the moving plot left me desperate for more. Kaydence Snow outdid herself with this debut and is officially a one-click author for me.

A story that holds you and never lets you go
Variant Lost is a profound story that goes beyond the usual and transcends into the extraordinary. It seamlessly weaves intrigue, suspense, angst and romance into a well-crafted masterpiece that holds you and never lets you go. This is a book that snags your attention, draws you in and will have you turning the pages until the early hours of the morning. It's the perfect new adult fantasy romance.
Evie and the men she finds in her life that have Variant abilities come together as moths to flame. Their connections are intoxicating, their banter and wit draws out their individual mannerisms effortlessly. Kaydence Snow builds, manages and delivers upon the complexities of the RH relationship with faultless fluidity. Every scene and every conversation further enhances her fictional world, creating a richness that had me hungry for more.
There is a grace with this book, a tempo that maintains tension, yet allows the reader to be absorbed in the eloquent narrative. I found this story as enthralling and captivating as the characters themselves.

So, briefly, my reason for 5 stars --- I liked the book so much I bought it after reading it free on Unlimited, because I intend to re-read it (and the series) as it finishes. Regardless of flaws the book may have, my desire to re-read it puts it in 5-star territory for me, personally.
- Character development is better than most PNR.
- The romance underlies the story, rather than the story revolving around nothing but romance or explicit scenes.
- Has enough unresolved detail to make me wait (anxiously) for the next installment.
- The main character caves in FAR easier than expected near the end of the book after her freak-out; seems out of character
- It is a little difficult to connect with some of the male characters because you don't understand where they are coming from since the entire book is in 1st person.
As for the poor reviews - for context:
1. There are 1-2 paragraphs mentioning climate change in this book - a half-page at maximum.
2. There is 1 paragraph providing statistics on the number of guns in the U.S. followed by a pondering from the main character about whether the situation at hand is a result of poor gun control.
That's it. There's no lingering theme on these topics.
Oh - and on the gun item - one of the other characters pulls out a gun at one point, and by the time the scene is finished, the main character is happy the other character had a gun to keep them safe --- so, an argument can be made that the "gun control" stance item is not really a stance as the character presents a different opinion later.
I compare this character to BONES (TV Show) in some ways. The character is intelligent, resorts to factoids under pressure, and is highly opinionated, yet can also be irrationally emotional. The opinions expressed in the book align with the science-minded personality of the character. Whether that opinion is also the author's opinion on these areas really doesn't matter, especially looked at in context - these "real life political topics" encompass ONE page (total) in almost 400 pages.
You want to write about that - fine. Leave it out of a PNR. There's a reason we read romance books. It's called escapism.
Things to know before you read: I can't really think of anything I didn't like in this book. Seriously. I tried and I have nothing.
I found Kaydence's characters very easy to love and look forward to seeing how their relationships evolve after [EVENTS IN BOOK 1]. I found the women relatable and the men likeable (when that was the intention). There was even a love-to-hate woman! I kind of hope she is a villain later on...
I found the unfolding backstory very interesting. I didn't feel like I got a huge info dump in chapter 1 and then everything else was just the story going on. Evelyn's past, which shaped her present, was presented as it became pertinent without feeling like the author just decided the character was this way because *insert past here for story progression*. I feel like I know Evelyn as I know myself.
The atmosphere and the environment are very well constructed. Since books present like movies to me, I can be knocked from a story and then struggle to get back into the atmosphere but I never had a problem with this book.
The writing is incredible. I could probably write a book about how great this book is but then that would take away from reading this book (for both of us). Definitely in my top 10 picks of 2018!
The guys were either flat or completely unlikable. Alec is a jerk and we're never really given a reason for his terrible behaviour. He's hot and cold for no real reason.
I did appreciate all of Eve's budding female friendships. I actually thought this would be YA based on the first chapter but it's not (although the only sexy times were with Alec the jerk so...). Bottom line, this is a good start to a new series. Hopefully, as the author develops her skill she'll stop using so much exposition. A good 45% of this could have been left out without hurting the storyline. I'll probably read the next one.

For weeks, I've been in book limbo and I've been searching for a decent read.
See, I'm picky. I nitpick, cannot stand grammatical errors, and I'm not ashamed to say that I've quit on a book from being bored more than I can count.
However, when I saw another author raving about this book, I clicked on the pre-order, hoping it was as good as they said, and completely forgot about it.
When it finally popped up in my kindle library, I braced myself for this never ending bout of disappointment and began reading.
It was... amazing!
The authors style of writing is really good and kept me hooked. The plot is strong with some powerful scenes, and I instantly connected with each character as they're introduced.
The reverse harem aspect is different - which I loved - as it isn't just some girl jumping straight into bed with several men. Each guy is unique and seem to fit the MC perfectly, in their own way.
I'm very excited to see what happens in book two. This author has now made it onto my "Keeping Watch" list.
Thank you for your creativity!
I would recommend to anyone who just wants to settle down with an actual good book!
I found this novel to be fantastically entertaining. The story was gripping and pulled you in from the start; I was totally absorbed by the book and I couldn’t put it down. It was well-paced, exciting at the right times and never dragged. The main character finds herself in a situation that you can’t help but feel for her, and then ends up trying to navigate a world she doesn’t know much about. She is put through the ringer, and the guys are a bit of a mixed bag. It’s not all insta-love in this book, or so it seems. I have my theories for future books. The point is, it really adds to the story that it doesn’t all click at the start, even if you end up wanting to wring some necks. The author is so good about evoking the right emotion, so you feel what Eve feels - worry, fear, angst, embarrassment, butterflies, lust. And there’s a twist at the end! I did not see it coming. I am so looking forward to book 2when it comes out. This is definitely an author who has started out on the right foot.
It does end on a cliffhanger but with book 2 due to come out early this year that's not too long to wait. And hopefully by then Alex will have got over himself.
All in all, a good read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series when it becomes available.
I stopped at 50% because I was just getting annoyed, read a whole other book and decided to come back and try finish this. Nope, it just kept getting more ridiculous. This book should just be a Y\A it most definitely reads like it was written for a young audience.
The story started off quite slow and steady, it really picked up though and is so worth the read guys!!! Love the writing style, Eve isn't an annoying cliché bruised heroine (thk gawd). Love all the characters background story's and omg they're also freaking HAWT ! H.A.W.T. ... Alec though... Nah Josh is my fave though 😍 anyways the whole point of this rambled up review that doesn't make any sense whatever with a whole side of drool IS that is was bloody fantastic and I'm going on to binge read all the rest of this authors books 🤩🔥
