Michelle C. Reilly did an amazing job setting up a unique sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal suspense romance. I was invested int he characters and so engrossed in the plot that I got smacked in the face at the end with no idea as to how the rest of the series will go. I love when I cannot foresee the ending.
Fall into too chaos with Leah as she finds out on her sixteenth birthday she is a witch. Torn by having to choose leaving her foster brother behind, with their parental slime, or going back to face 'what's coming to her,' she decides to become stronger and hopefully be able to come back for him later.
Four years have passed; she is becoming a very capable witch but after over reacting on a student by plowing her into a wall. The head of Sanctuary sees more happening with Leah's power than they can handle.
Auden, king of an alien race called Anathergians, is constantly being reminded that his powers are fading and that he needs to take a Lifemate soon or his powers will become unstable. Right in the thick of it, we find he is working with his people on a mystery plaguing the Las Vegas Nevada area. Humans are showing similar signs of being part of their race, armed with strength, speed and wait ...what ...fangs? While trying to locate answers on the Variants, he gets a call from Sanctuary to come check out a girl that might be part of their race. Placing his plans on hold he heads to the mountains of Utah.
After being introduced, Auden and Leah find themselves falling into disarray. Leah's life is once again turned inside out, feeling as though she is being cast out from her witch family and pushed on to someone else. Auden, is drawn and curious with Leah but not enough to consider her as possible Lifemate. He is only there to help her not hold on too.
Leah agrees to go with him under the condition of getting her foster brother back. She is thrown into their world. Training, schooling, fighting and finding out about her heritage is all she has to think about. Until she ends up going through a life altering change that requires seclusion, blood and lots of sex. After saving her from a horde of Variants he realizes she is going through the change. Auden has to make a decision that could ruin both of their lives. After a night of passion they find themselves bonded as Lifemates.
Leah is confused and hurt, while Auden keeps pushing her away and yet finds that he can't stop wanting her. Now is the mist of trying to find who is creating Variants and balancing a cascade of emotions between the two of them. Leah's past maybe the only answer to who is creating the Variants. Could this bring them closer to love or perhaps ruin of them both?
I gave this read four stars, (but really it's four and a half) because it was a slow start but creative ways, plot twist, battles and steamy sex will have you hanging on until the end and trust me, the end leaves you griping-the-book hanging. Can't wait for the next one, well done!
