First before I go any further, what a rush! Heroes and Heroines unite! Achilles and Boudicca and Sundance joine Anne Bonny and Michael the Arch Angel in a fight for the ages. The great big over all theme will blow your mind and at the same time remind you of Spock and Kirk playing three dimensional chess!
Amy Vasant is a literary superhero. One of her greatest superpowers is the ability to grab the reader with the first, short chapter. With in this trilogy alone, she has done it with a real life Pirate Queen swashbuckling through a scene, a homage to Captain Spitfire of Captain Blood fame or a wave to Geena Davis in one of my favorite movies, Cutthroat Island. It doesn't matter, your caught like a bass and being pulled in.
The second book begins with a set of the giggles, putting me in the frame of mind of Northanger Abbey. I had to remind myself not to read this in public. I even had to explain my riotous laughter to my poor non reader husband.
Varymor reaches a very different pitch, and Stephen King and Clive Barker couldn't have done better to grab you by those short hairs on the back of your neck that raise when ever something strikes your fight or flight instinct.
She also has the super power of defining the differences in good and evil. In the matter of 4 chapters, the villains of the book are revealed. One is clearly just troubled, the next is purely evil in a pretty package – a true sociopath and the final, who has driven the series, is crazy as a bag of cats!
Fans of history and of pseudo-history will laugh at her other super powers, sliding in sacred places and hints all around. I would like to point out that two of my Humanities professors would be deeply disappointed in Achilles, or at least that he wasn't still in mourning for Patrolocus. Personally, having always held Boudicca is highest esteem, I was happy to see her in all her glory. I'm glad she got her guy in the end.
I particularly enjoy the way one villain gains redemption (not going to tell you who) and another sets up the possibility of a sequel.
The battle scenes, the extended one at the end and the one at Angelus HQ are amazing. I can see action heroes from days gone by floating in and out, maybe even Erroll Flynn was in there somewhere.
Ms. Vasant is herself a super heroine in writer's form who can drag us from our mundane world into a world where chess playing entities use world's as poker chips and Angels fall in love with pirate queens. And should there be a sequel, since Ms. Vansant has a love of redheaded bullheaded pirate rebels Grace O'Malley would make a great partner for Sundance.
5 out of 5
The third book starts with a lot of action, as Anne and Con are trying to protect the arch angels and the humans. They are out to kill all the cherubim that want to hurt mankind. They loose Michael the head of the arch angels when he sacrifices his self to save the sentinel Anne Bonny. They are able to kill some of the cherubim but in a final show down the cherubim have created a seven headed dragon to do battle with the arch angels and sentinels. One of the cherubim wants to convert to be an arch angel with his help and the remaining arch angels and sentinels they come to a last stand. It is amazing how the author is able to magically weave the story and you can not put it down . You can't wait to see how it ends, as Anne with the help of the others defeat the dragon and cherubim. When the dragon is finally slayed they are able to bring Michael back by using Seth another arch angel . I would recommend to all readers to buy all three books , as it is an amazing read if you like action and suspense.
