I usually where a size 13 in Adidas and Nike running shoes. I bought a size 12 and 13 (yes both sizes) and they arrived at my house in about a week. The size 12 fit good, but I thought my toes were a little tight in the toe box. They (size 12) felt fine while walking inside my house, but I think when on the trails, up and down hills, etc, my toes would probably start being crammed into the end of the shoe, so I went with the 13, since there is no option for size 12.5.
How I use the boot:
I do SOME hiking, but mostly this boot is on construction jobsites all day. I'm a project manager for a small construction company, so I might be on 3-4 different jobsites each day. Or I may be doing paperwork in the office. Boot is solid on gravel, asphalt, mud, climbing scaffolds, crossing creeks, or climbing rocks. Great boot overall.
My foot situation:
I wear custom orthotics (aka...custom made insoles). I have a very high arch and had major foot pain for years until a foot surgeon recommend I try custom orthotics. LIFE CHANGER. That being said, I took the Vasque Sundownwr size 13, left the factory insole in the boot, and put my custom orthotic insole ON TOP OF the factory insole. Yes, I have the factory insole PLUS my custom orthotic insole, and the size 13 for perfect. If I only used the factory insole, size 13 felt a little big. If you can't decide on 12 or 13, and you think 12 MAY cramp your toes, size up to the 13. And FYI...most folks on here say "wear thick socks." I just wear regular men's black tube socks from Target. Works fine for me.
The boot:
As far as the boot feels.....AMAZING. I had some of the Italian made sundowners when I was 17 years old, and this boot is JUST AS AWESOME. Redwing leather definitely feels great, looks great, bends easily, just an awesome boot all around.
Food for thought:
I ordered the vasque Sundowner (in size 12 and 13) AND a pair of Redwing Classic Round boots size 13. Redwings fit perfect, but lot of slip in the heel due to long break in period. Once Redwings break in, they are awesome. My plan was to choose between the Redwing boot and the Vasque Sundowner. After wearing the redwing few days around the house, I realized the leather insole in the redwing was going to take A LONG TIME to break in. Awesome boot, but leather insoles are tough and take a long time to break in. The Vasque Sundowner has a regular foam insole and more of a flexible cemented sole (vs the Redwing Goodyear welt sole). With my foot pain problems, I don't have 3 months to wait for the redwing boot to become comfortable. After just 1 week the Sundowner feels amazing.
Verdict:
BUY THE SUNDOWNER!!! You'll love it. And as an added bonus, Vasque includes a set of red laces in the box. These red laces look great on the dark brown leather.

There is a reason why this style of boot has been around for so long because it works. No ridiculously shaped soul. Very comfortable, supportive, eyelets and hooks never fail. I think they are perfect but one thing that would make them even more perfect in my estimation is to add a rand. I have old boots that have a rand and I think in rocky conditions they help with longevity.

I have purchased 4 pairs of these boots over the last 8 years. I wear them everyday. I have always lived in the big city and but work hard with my body during the day and also have to go to formal functions at night. These are not just hiking boots or used for construction, they are all around the best boots you will ever find. I use a nice boot polish to shine them up if I go out. Completely waterproof, I step in pools of water in the city while watching other people walking around them. They will conform to your feet after two weeks and fit like a glove. They don't wear out, ever. I buy a new pair because I've spilled paint on them or cut them with a box knife, but still keep the previous pair for backup. Hands down the best boot!

There are good reviews on the 1st version of the Italian made Sundowner and super bad reviews on the 2nd generation of China made, it breaks easily. Lately, I have been reading mixed reviews on the 3rd generation of Vietnam made. However, I wanted a pair of Sundowner for a long time and decide to purchased it off Amazon for the Christmas ’18. I always wanted a pair of durable leather boots. My previous pair of Timberlands boots lasts me almost 9 years, re-sole multiple times.
Reading off the web, I was advised to purchase a size bigger for Vasque. I took the advised and purchased it with a size 8W. When the boots arrived, it fit nicely, but the 8W, it doesn’t feel like it is wide. However, it still feels comfortable.
Before I wore the shoes, I applied a layer of Obenauf’s heavy duty LP, it waterproofs the leather and made it slightly soft. I would call my trusty leather oil.
Blisters and pain will always accompany with a good pair of boots and it will take time for the boots to conform to the feet’s, the way one moves and etc. I have been in the army before and when dealing with leather boots, you have to take a little bit of time.
This is my first week, and I have blisters as expected and a bit tight on the ankle. At present, it is the first couple of days wearing these boots, so I have put everything on average on the review. I will be wearing these boots on every day for about 5-7 km walk. I will come back in 6 month time and see how these shoe fair.

I was originally hyped by these. They look fairly nice, and I must admit they are very comfortable. If you go online you'll see people raving about how long their old sundowners have lasted over the years, only requiring replacing the sole periodically. Yet look closer at the photos of the old sundowners with the new. In particular look closely at the midsole. There's something very different there. It appears that these new sundowners now use a polyurethane midsole. This guarnatees this will not be a 'buy it for life' product, you could put these in your closet and in 5 - 10 years put them on and go out for a walk and the entire midsole will crumble into dust on account of hydrolysis. Wearing them, not wearing them, it won't matter, these things are lifed to around 5 - 10 years before that midsole material will break literally crumble on you, randomly and without any warning, there's no tell-tale signs on the outside. You might go out one day and be 10 hours into a hike, far from civilization and these suddenly crumble on you. How is that a good design idea? I've yet to read many complaints on this issue and I can't figure out when the design change took place, but go read on Asolo boots and the issues people have had with their polyurethane midsoles there. Polyurethane is a great material for a midsole, and totally appropriate for a less expensive disposable style hiking shoe, the kind of shoe whose uppers will fall apart long before 5 years anyhow. For an expensive full grain leather upper boot that is intended to be with you for over a decade however, it's an unforgiveable design decision in my opinion, and why I'm giving these 1 star. I can not suggest in good faith paying over $300 for something that can not be relied upon in the field, and has a guaranteed finite lifespan built-in whether you are even using the product or not. Look for EVA midsoles like the Danner Mountain light II's use, those are boots which will last, and the norweigan welt ensures many inexpensive resolings. One final thing I should note, due to the sundowner being a cemented on sole, use wax based leather conditioners are your own peril, many pages including REI comment how the wax based treatments will infuse the leather to such an extend that any future attempt at using adhesive will fail to form a structurally sound bond with a new sole, meaning all other factors aside, you might be ruining any potentail to resole these, and with the non-vibram sole, I can't speak to how long the proprietary sole will hold up, but some reviews hint that it may not be long.

The Legendary Sundowner is back!
Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on October 7, 2019Size: 11Color: HawthorneVerified Purchase
I started seriously hiking in the early 90's right at the time when Vasque had a legend status among hikers for their Italian made Sundowners. Great boot by all accounts. Then Vasque did the unthinkable and moved production to China and they got roasted for it. The Chinese made boots were nothing like the originals. I tried the China-downers in the 90's and returned them immediately. Fast forward to today and Vasque has once again moved production to Vitenam instead, using leathers from Redwing USA. I purchased with skepticism, but the new boots are excellent!! And worthy of the name, fit is great, quality is there, hoping the longevity will pan out. If I have one criticism, is that the sole compound seems a bit more slippery than Vibram soles that I normally use. For the $104 that I paid for the Hawthorn (Suede), bargain of the year.

I liked the boots and once the existing return order is finalized and complete i will reorder the sundowner boot and rather that size 7.5 i will state size 8. i should point out that this would have been my fourth pair of sundowner boots. The previous three pair had all been a size 7.5. I liked the boots send and and have kept them if they hadn't been so tight across the toes.
