I've seen a lot of complaints about the quality of the boot, but this pair is as good as the first pair I got 15 years ago. As long as Vasque is making Sundowners, I'll never own another hiking boot.
I cannot recommend these enough. I wish they had a corresponding knee high model too. They are completely waterproof, unless they get overtopped. A bit of polish is all I have ever really needed for these boots.
Yeah, I do see that the quality suffered since my last Italian made pair. But if I remember correctly I paid $140-150 in the mid 90s for those. Paid $125 for these. Hard to find folks in first-world countries to stitch boots together for a modest wage, I suppose.
Today was the end of that happy story. Gearing up for my next backpacking trip, I pulled my new pair of Sundowners out of the newly arrived Amazon box and tried them on. I couldn't even walk across the living room. Inside the top side edge of the left tongue there was a very hard knot of what seems to be glue. It stabbed the inside of my left ankle bone like a sharp stone. What a pain!
Upon close examination I saw there was a similar but smaller knot on the other side of the opposite tongue. Examining my old pair I found nothing of the sort.
I had recently read a few reviews decrying the decline in the quality of Sundowners. I didn't want to believe it. I do now. Fortunately I discovered it before I was on the trail.
Looks like shoddy workmanship has taken hold at Vasque. Too bad.
