I researched hiking boots for a couple weeks and found these Vasque Monolith being highly praised in several locations by people who actually hike in them. So I took a gamble - guessed at my size - and ordered a pair, sight unseen.
THEY ARE PERFECT!
Light, but sturdy. Solidly built, but flexible enough that you don't feel like you've got a plate of metal under your sole. Breathable. Lightly padded, not stuffed full of padding, it still breathes well. No sweaty sock after a couple hours! Zero break-in period! No rubbing, pinching, binding, and no seams in painful locations! Reasonably priced.
I love the color combo of the grey ones, the second color is sort of a greenish grey. Very subdued. However, someone dropped the ball in the designers' group and put purple laces on them! LOL! Not irritating enough of a color that I'll run out to purchase black or grey laces, but... Really? Purple? Sigh. Not everyone craves party colors in their camping gear. Some of us like natural colors and subdued shades.
Fit was as expected. Well-made. Comfortable. Durable, I've been wearing them for a couple months now, and they still look brand new, no stray threads or pulling seams. Not even any tread wear yet.
Update: More than two years later, I still love these. They've not had heavy use, but I wear them in Winter as my "snow boots", too, so they get year round light use. No fraying or popped threads. The soles barely look worn. And I still haven't replaced those purple laces... :)
They fit like SLIPPERS, but my foot must have grown, and my toe was right to the end, but still comfy. The toe guard had a rip, and wouldn't be good with heavy socks, so I searched to find a similar pair after (????) years.
Saw these on Amazon, close to same style.
Thanks to all of your great reviews, I decided to go a half size up, from 7 to 71/2, and went wide, instead of medium width.
Just received them, and am I pleasantly surprised!!!!
They fit perfectly; couldn't be better length, and wide fit like the old medium did.
Put next to each other, the old Vasque and new Vasque, they look the same size! (i'll try to add a pic later). I'm thinking that my foot was slightly smaller years back (and closer to a 6 1/2), so the 7 worked then, and I need a 7 1/2 now.
So, from what I can surmise, Vasque have always run about 1/2 size small, but are now narrower.
Unless you have a narrow foot, I'd order WIDE, which looks and feels, like medium, especially if you plan to wear heavy socks..
A half size up will not be a deal breaker; If you plan to wear heavy socks and hike, you might even go up a whole size, depending on what fit you like. I like my toe to come to the end, but not touch, kind of like a slipper. The 1/2 size up gives me that extra little wiggle room.
If you are a long time Vasque wearer, the sizes seems the same to me; maybe 1/2 size small. My old 7's are close to being a little short, and the 7 1/2 is perfect.
If this is your first pair, go 1/2 size up and go wide, (unless you wear narrow), and you will get the most comfortable, attractive, lightweight, all around boot I have ever owned!!
When I found the old Vasque's, I had no idea what I paid for them, so was wary about spending so much on a hiking boot. Amazon had the best price, and this style is the closest to my old ones, so I gave it a shot.
WORTH IT!!! My old ones are SO comfortable , and these look to be the same!!
