The boots also managed to stay completely dry even though recent rains had transformed the trails into small brooks.
Be aware that the Wasatch is a little on the heavy side for a day hiker. On the plus side, that heaviness translates into superior ankle support. The quality of the leather uppers appears to be a big step up over boots costing a little less. Also appreciated is the fact that the soles are softer and stick better on bare rock than is usual for a heavier boot.
The claim that the boot runs true to size is probably correct, but also a little bit odd because no one will buy these to wear with thin dress socks on sidewalks. Thick hiking socks will add roughly one-half size, and a hiking boot should also be sized with extra space at the toe. The bottom line is that my size (United States) in a dress shoe is 10.5 wide, while my best fit in the Vasque Wasatch was 11.5 medium.
Update 12-25-09. Survived Kansas blizzard in these boots. After 2.5 hours out in snow feet are warm and dry. Awesome.
The last boot I bought was a Keen boot for it's wide toe box, but after one year on rugged rocky terrain the non-Vibram sole completely wore out. Many years ago I loved my Vasque Sundowners, and now these boots are a good replacement for those.
They were comfortable (I have wide feet with bunions so I have a really hard time to fit). Even when they stopped offering wide in my size (apparently now they only offer wide in size 7 or bigger) the regular non wides still fit my feet fine.
They lasted me 2 1/2 years (yes, I know several people said longer but I am hard on my shoes, I tend to wear my favorite pair everyday to do everything with so these were my everyday shoes. Plus in the summer several 7 mile walks around the surrounding neighborhoods and daily mile and a half walks really wear out the sole which was made for trails, not pavement. And I tend to walk in a way that all my shoes get very uneven heels after a while. It took a year or more before that started to show on these shoes and usually you can tell by half a year that I wear my shoes unevenly and by a year usually with most shoes it is obviously unhealthy to be still using them they're so worn unevenly). When I threw them away you'd never know why until you looked at the sole, the upper was in great condition (but the soles were just trashed at that point. And you could finally tell I put more pressure on the outer edge of my foot. And it still didn't look as bad there as some of my shoes have before I throw them away). Overall, first pair of shoes I've had that lasted me 2 years (usually they're done by 1).Read more ›
