Great hammer made in USA, smooth hickory handle and nice smooth work on the head. Hard to find these locally anymore.

This is American made hickory that the handle is easy to find a replacement. Any wooden hammer will be the best on one's wrists to absorb shock.

I've been a Union carpenter for Disney World and have tried metal, fiberglass, and wood handled hammers. Wood always conforms to your hand as a natural extension. :-) I've bought this hammer 3 times because we couldn't take my tools to Israel and when I came back I bought a 16 oz and a 22oz Vaughn and love them both.

This one is a keeper.

Why is a good wooden handled hammer so hard to find at the hardware store these days? Everything has gone fancy heads, shafts and grips. Hammer designs seem to change faster than shampoo bottles.

This is the hammer I reach for first.

Vaughan has the best shaped handle on the market for a traditional hammer. American hickory used for the handle is known for its strength, lightweight and shock absorbing ability. Vaughan has properly polished the head unlike a lot of hammers out there in this price range which harks back to a time when making a quality wooden handled hammer mattered more than it obviously does today.

16oz is the perfect weight for use around the house. Rip-claw vs. typical curved claw lets you take stuff apart (demo time!).

Caveat: fits best in bare hands (can be slippery with gloves due to lacquered finish on handle).

I purchased two of these Vaughan rip hammers, a 10oz for smaller nails and a 16oz for general use. The quality and workmanship is well above that of inexpensive store-bought hammers, but there were three labels (company logo, barcode, & safety warning) on each of the wooden handles which left behind considerable glue after removal. Even worse, nothing (water, oil, WD-40, etc) was entirely successful in removing all the glue from the pores of that wood. At this point, short of sanding and applying a new finish, I'm evidently stuck with that glue indefinately. That said, I'm still impressed enough with the hammers to give both a good rating.

I recently misplaced mine after 40+ years of heavy use. Too bad. The handle showed weathering but looked good for another 40 years. The head had aged to a beautiful dark hue, with no rust and no noticeable wear, although I did sand the face every 5 years just to take off the shine.

It's perfectly balanced, feeling more like 10 or 12 oz., a joy to use all day. The long handle allows for real power when needed, or choke up a bit for more precise control and less force. There was no sign at all of any loosening of the head from the handle. I wish I were made as well!

I'm going to look for it a few more days before buying another, probably from Amazon as most hardware and tool stores only sell the Vaughn framing hammer.

UPDATE: My new hammer arrived from Amazon today. In reference to another review, paint thinner (mineral spirits) quickly and easily removed all vestiges of adhesive from my beautiful new hammer.

If you need "a hammer", this should be your first choice. It is midlin' sized, and perfect in every way. If you were a cabinetmaker, you might rather have a 999L. If you were a trim carpenter, you would probably rather have a #9 "little pro". If you were framing a house, the Stiletto TI14MC is the way to go. But for most people, this is the best all-around hammer that ever was.

The Vaughan 16 ounce Rip Hammer is my weapon of choice while tackling this year's demolition project. I'm not a professional, just a retired do-it-yourselfer with a 100 year home that always seems to need attention. This is a well balanced hammer that lets me tear down without tearing up my shoulder, arm and hand. I don't need to let the wrong tool do more damage to me than to what I'm tearing down. As with my Vaughan 14-Ounce Dalluge Titanium Hammer and Vaughan 19-Ounce California Framer you can rely on the Vaughan name for quality. At the price, you can't go wrong. ~ The Boss
