I am NOT a vegetarian, but The Flavor Bible is the most useful book in my kitchen, so as soon as I heard about The Vegetarian Flavor Bible I ordered it. It's hard to believe that it is even bigger and even better than the original. I'm very happy to have it as a guide to cooking with vegetables, grains, beans, mushrooms, and much more.

I have ordered one for all of my friends as gifts this year.

The photo's are beautiful and the presentation is more like a tabletop book than a cookbook.

Oh my goodness, YESS!! I didn't know this book existed until today when I came across it at a very cute independent book store. How did I miss this? When did this come out?? I thumbed through it and it was a MUST HAVE. Its everything I could want to compliment the first The Flavor Bible: The Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity, Based on the Wisdom of America's Most Imaginative Chefs, which is one of my most-used and all-time favorite books. This Vegetarian Flavor Bible is all about "G-BOMBS", the most nutritionally dense foods for a healthful daily diet: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds.

Before I dive into a deeper review, you can pick this up brand new on eBay through Barnes & Noble direct seller and other online sellers right now for about $25. I got mine at the store, but bought another through eBay already for a gift!

I've purchased a lot of cookbooks in the last 10 years, and I've grown to be way more discerning in the last year of what books I will allow myself to buy. Many of my more recent books have focused on plant based foods. I used to be a big meat lover, and I still do enjoy a good piece of meat from time to time, but my body craves vegetables--and lots of them--all the time! This Vegetarian Flavor Bible was love at first sight. Its bigger (in a good way, not excessive bulk), and its got a ton of information, which all translates into more flavor pairings, whether you're using 1 vegetable or combining multiple vegetables.

It follows the same format as The Flavor Bible. For those unfamiliar with the format, this is NOT a cookbook.

If you bought "The Vegetarian Flavor Bible" you will learn how to pronounce Açai let alone learn how to eat it.

It irks me going through organic and health food stores and looking at all the new exotic food stuff and trying to figure out how to eat it or if I want to eat it. Worse than that it is starting to get impossible to read energy bars that used to have chemicals that I can understand but now have obscure organic plant material.

This book is more than a cook book. It gives general information on what vegetables are and how they can be used. Organized from a to z.

For example under the P's is Pomegranates TIPS: While the season for fresh pomegranates is short the fruit freezes well. Persephone can tell you what the side effects of eating the seeds are. However she never tried Pomegranate Kiwi pancakes.

With the whole book indexed you do not need an index. It is nice to have it in hard cover, because the book would be too unwieldy as paperback. It even comes with a fancy with one of those fancy cloth ribbon book marks.

This is one of my favorite books - cookbook or other. The concept of a flavor bible is fantastic for those of us that follow recipes lightly and make lots of substitutes. So easy to create flavorful meals based on what is available in kitchen or garden. Have a bunch of kale? Kale reference shows the flavorings that go best with kale and are scaled by significance with bold and capital letters (like garlic, sea salt, green onions, dried cranberries, and lemon). So many top chef curated dish combinations listed too. Honestly, this has transformed my cooking to a whole new level - even though I'm a home cook with limited time and resources. This is a fantastic cooking reference, but the best part is the beginning part of the book where the author explains her journey of interest in vegetarian foods. If that's not encouragement enough, she highlights the professional interest in vegetarian cuisine by top chefs in the field. Personally, I adopted vegan diet last year for health reasons. Switching to a new way of eating and cooking while keeping great flavors was very difficult. Vegetarian Food Bible was a great guide in the wilderness of new foods. I no longer feel like a food weirdo after reading of so many highly regarded food professionals switching to plant based preferences. I was so mesmerized by this book when I first got it. After poring through it for months, I still am. 5 stars is not enough for the Vegetarian Flavor Bible. I highly recommend it.
