A sinister undercurrent, rarely noticed in the peaceful lakeside community in Virginia, is explained away as the work of predatory animals when answers are demanded. Foreshadowing and clues give the reader hints as the story unfolds.
Danielle Gillette also has an undercurrent in her personal life perpetuated by guilt and lack of self-esteem. A successful mystery writing, she lives a rather isolated life. Only her friend Marina and her neighbor old Mr. Anderson see her as anything other than one of the outsiders who live by the lake.
Kurt Hawkins loves the quiet country along the lake, but he lives in limbo since his wife disappeared two years ago. He feels he cannot move on until he finds out what happened to her. Professionally, he functions but otherwise, he seems to just tread water--waiting.
Morehouse and Davis weave a mystery and love story together with fantastic imagery and descriptions that make the setting come alive and whet all the senses.
Most of the secondary characters enrich the story. Trevor (Travis) and Kurt's sister-in-law seem to be rather a side trip for the reader. Some of the characters make the story glisten with humor and gossip, while others shroud the story with ominous and secret doings that create an uneasy tension in the picturesque community. The tension escalates until ... WOW! And, no, I can't tell you what happens. You'll have to read that for yourself.
Kurt and Danielle stumble and struggle as each comes to terms with the past that finally is accepted as just what it is--the past. The joy they find with each other is gratifying.
Veil of Deception is a story of redemption and a testament of the never-ending struggle of good and evil.
