The story develops as Princess Kelsey struggles to adapt to the implants that was forced onto her. I think Kelsey has become my favorite character in the series with Commander Mertz coming in as close second. Kelsey is quick with her mouth, sharp and, after having received the implants, she is truly a “kick ass chick”.
The book is an enjoyable mix between adventure, discovery and action as in kicking the butts of the bad guys. It is fairly fast paced but not too fast. As with the previous book it is perhaps somewhat light reading but I found it to be a quite fun read nonetheless.
Each time Jared & Co think they have a handle on the situation a new surprise pops up around the corner. Sometimes it is a good one and sometimes it is a bad one. In either case it leads to more adventure for our friends. They themselves makes some new interesting friends as well as some new enemies. One thing I like with these books (small spoiler ahead) is that the bad guys generally receive the clobbering they deserve. Maybe not at once in the same book as they are introduced in but sooner or later their judgment day is coming (yes I am lagging behind with the reviews and I am already a few books ahead).
I was about to write that I am looking forward to the next book but that is rather meaningless since I already bought as well as read it.
I was engaged enough to read all seven of the books currently published. Similar to Doug Dandridge's Exodus series a war with an overwhelming enemy and unfortunately also a never ending story. I am a bit OCD and hate series that do not end, or at least each story is complete in itself.
This series follows history as descendents of a galactic empire come back into contact with the forces which overthrew the original Empire. The author takes several side plots as he develops the war. Hopefully he will actually bring the war to some conclusion soon as I hate unfinished stories.
A bastard emperors son who just wants to do his duty to the Empire, a spoiled princess,a conniving emperors' son who fears the bastard is after his future throne, evil computers with mind controlled people, a beautiful princess from another space kingdom, space battles and technology breakthroughs, ...this series includes almost every cliche possible. But they are cliches because they work. This is a fun fast paced series. You should read in order to get the most out each character. But don't expect great literature, just fun. Although I think you could pick up almost any of the books and read them independently. The series starts out slow as borderline three to four star, but gets better. The series as a whole is a solid four stars.
A mission to a nearby star system may be just what they need. They control the skies, but until they control the planet, the Rebel Empire can still hurt them. Things come apart when their new enemies make their move. It will be up to Kelsey and Jared to stop them before their new found friends come to an untimely end.
Terry Mixon delivers the next episode in his Empire of Bones series. Jared and Kelsey grow and change in this book as they come to grips with their new reality. The galaxy will need them at their best, because the enemy isn't idle.
Terry is now on my short list with authors like Doug Dandridge (Exodus: Empires at War series), Vaughn Heppner, BV Larson, and Ryk Brown. If you like those books, you'll likely like this series.
With Book #2 (sequel to Empire of Bones) we start to get comfortable with the main characters, and become comfortable with the Space Opera genre this series is in. The main characters (Kelsey and Jared) are likable and I want to read more about them. I personally appreciate having characters that are honorable. Thanks.
I'm also thankful that Terry keeps the language in check and keeps adult themes to hinted and indirect. Thank you! This helps me to recommend the great story I'm reading with my family and friends. Nothing ruins wanting to share a good book then having a trashy sex scene. Thanks for not doing that.
I've read books 1-3 and am looking forward to book #4.
