The backstory is amazing. From politics, to religion, to social acceptance of witches. Very cool! Deborah Blake takes our history of the Inquisition and witch hunts to the next level and adds other magical races into the equation. My favorite character is Ricky, the Kobold. Obviously, he's the comic relief and a perfect little helper for the main character, Donata. I also loved her familiar, a cat named Grimalkin (Grim). Because-- cats!
I read in the acknowledgments that this story was originally called Pentacles and Pentimentos. To me, that makes it even more clever because the author is an actual practicing witch. She writes non-fiction and fiction books about witchcraft, and she also has her own Tarot deck.
Really, who else is better qualified to write about magic than Ms Blake?
The next book, Veiled Menace, will drop on April 18th. I've got mine pre-ordered and looking forward to it!
The world has a paranormal vibe to it, but I like the direction Blake is taking with it. This first novel shared from Donata’s perspective introduced key characters and offered up one hell of a suspenseful mystery that allows the characters to have growth. Donata finds herself with more than a familiar when a Kobold named Ricky follows her home. She soon finds herself evading her boss, and seeking help from Peter Casaventi, a half-dragon forger, her ex-boyfriend, Magnus Torvald, a smexy alpha shapeshifter and her estranged family. I loved the dynamics, the possible love interests and other secondary characters we met.
Aside from the stellar world building, Blake delivered a kick-ass heroine who isn’t a whiner. (thank you) I loved how this motley crew interacted and the humorous moments. Ricky was delightful, and the posturing between Peter and Magnus will leave you grinning.
Pick up this ebook. And then wait with the rest of us for the author to write a sequel.
However, then Ms. Blake found her rhythm and the fun got started. So, my advice: buy it, read it, and don't quit early. The next book comes out in April, and I would hate for you to miss the party!
