For me, the life of the Marut is much like the American Indians. So my visual picture was this frame of reference.
The love story was sweet and not overly done. The interaction between the very believable.
This book was an easy smooth read. I felt complete are the ending and have to wonder what comes next to make it a trilogy.
As in her other books, Kearney weaves a gentle love story into Veiled Planet and it works--very well.
In other reviews of Kearney's work I've called her a "master storyteller" and a master wordsmith. This novel doesn't disappoint. Kearney has a strong grip on her craft and this novel exemplifies her mastery of the language and her art. The novel is gripping and was hard for me to put down (and I have read it twice). This is classified as a "coming of age" novel for young adults. Don't let that put you off. In my 60's, I was thoroughly satisfied with the book. . This is volume one of a three novel series...thank heavens. This world and its people are amazing and I'm certainly glad to know there will be much more of it to come. Only one thing, Teagan Kearney, PLEASE give us book 2 SOON :) .
What a great book! Ms. Kearney knocks another one out into space!
The beginning 'Prologue' might make you wonder about the rest of the book, but no worries, its just the set up for the story. I actually went back and read it afterwards and it made a whole lot more sense!
I enjoyed the 'rules' that Ms Kearney put at the beginning of each chapter. Whether Colony Settlement Rules, or Marut Proverb. It was a nice way to get to know things.
So, Whats this book about you ask? The Colonists are on the planet Hamarkhis in an area the natives, Maruts, have allowed. The book starts out with Colonist trainee cadet Kara getting lost from her teammates after observing some flora and fauna on the trail. She comes across a kallin bear and in trying to get away from it she rolls down a hill. Thank heavens for her some of the Maruts had been tracking the animal and saved her.
Talk about a fish out of water! Kara is all of a sudden surrounded by the indigenous people of the planet that the Colonists felt were not as civilized or cultured as themselves. Kara finds that not to be true. Although they had not had much contact with the Marut tribes as they didn't allow it. On one hand I can see this, on the other it limits the knowledge each can have of one another. Whether one adopts the ways of another can be decided upon, but strict absence amongst each other brings fear of the other. Mainly because of lack of knowledge. Such was the Colonists and Maruts.
Because Kara was hurt the group takes Kara back to their camp to heal and rest. I think honestly they do not know what to do with her now that she is on their side of the line. On one hand the Colonists are not allowed to delve outside of their boundaries, but on the other it wasn't intentional. So begins the brokering of different cultures.
Kara is an endearing person and you come to love her spirit and affability amongst trials and tribulations within what her people think of as near savages. Little do they realize the Maruts have way more knowledge and understanding of life than they think. Neither do they realize where they originated. But Hopefully that'll be in the next books!
So come join us at the fire and keep warm while enjoying the story.
Just have to wait for the next book! Pout! Could NOT put this down! You've been warned!
