The Velbon DF-50 is a standard-size, heavy-duty tripod that's ideal for regular SLR cameras and video camcorders. The DF-50 is distinguished by such features as a three-way quick-release pan head for tilts and pans, a sure-grip handle that's positioned on the left side for easy access to the main camera controls, a dual-position quick-release platform, and a geared center platform for quick height adjustments. The three- section leg assemblies, meanwhile, are outfitted with such essentials as sturdy flip-lever locks, rubber-tipped feet, and steel ground spikes, all of which make the DF-50 remarkably stable even on rough terrain. Other details include an adjustment range of 21.5 to 59.5 inches, a folded length of 22.8 inches, and the ability to support up to 12 pounds of camera equipment. The DF-50 is also backed by a five-year warranty.

In the product description it said, "...heavy-duty tripod that's ideal for regular SLR cameras and video camcorders." I use a small Panasoic digital camcorder and this tripod does not perform well. In fact I would be surprised if it did well with a still camera. It supposedly has a "3-Way Fluid Pan Head", but it is not smooth in pan and sticks. The mechanism to loch the plate in is also inadequate and loose.

I do like the tripod portion (not the head). It is light and the legs are easy to adjust.

This is not a prosumer product.

This tripod is nice and I haven't even put my camera on it but I wanted to say a few positive things. I had no idea of the weight and when it arrived I wasn't sure it was the tripod because the box was so light. It's 3.3 pounds but it is very sturdy. It has 2 leg sections that extend and lock with a tiny level so you can make sure the tripod is level. The panning is really smooth and both horizontal and vertical panning has locking controls so once you get it positioned it won't change.

I am really happy with this tripod!

comes without the release plate shown in pic and finding the right size release plate sucks I went to 2 camera store and they say theres 2 different size plates and we tried both none fit

I like this older model, similar to the DF-60 for ease of use and has a crank for height adjustment. Also very cheap at $30 if you can still find it. I value old models and I live in the past.

Cheaper quality, defective??

We ordered this tripod because we take lots of pictures while hiking so we wanted something light. Prior to ordering this tripod, we had a Velbon Cx-540, it lasted a good five years through rugged use. We figure that the DF-50 was comparable in almost all the specs, was made by velbon and had retractable metal spikes as a bonus. How much difference could there be right? Well, the differences were significant enough for us to return it. Compared to the CX-540, the DF-50 handle is smaller and thinner, the tightening knobs are also smaller. (i.e. feels cheaper) The screw head that affixes the release plate to the camera is plastic on the model, as a result, it was hard to get the plate on tightly (even when using a screwdriver which I normally don't do)

The biggest and most annoying differences were that the tripod head DID NOT pan smoothly and the tilt feature (to take vertical shots) was not only VERY stiff but the location of the quick-release plate was in a bad. A few times when I went to tilt the camera to take a vertical shot, I popped the camera right out of the holding station because of the poorly place release switch. Finally, even when I tightened all the knobs, the tripod head would move (I shoot with a rebel XT <5lbs)

All and all, we were quite dissapointed and we would NOT recommend this tripod.

Good, solid tripod

I've had one of these for several years, and it hasn't let me down. I've used it for everything from macro shots of electronics to filming a wedding, and it's worked wonderfully. It's stable and pans/tilts smoothly. It's not ideal for low shots, as it's a bit tall even when completely collapsed. I've been very happy with this tripod.
