The dedicated Vello LHC-EW83J Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with Canon's EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens, by extending and shading the end of the lens. A dedicated lens hood is designed to perfectly match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area.

Inexpensive custom hood

This is the custom hood that your Canon lens should have come with. It improves contrast and clarity by reducing the amount of light causing glare in your lens or polarizer filter. It absorbs bangs, scrapes, and splashes that would otherwise land on your precious glass. If you're using a UV filter for mechanical protection, ditch it and use a hood instead.

As expected from such an inexpensive hood, the fit isn't perfect. It frequently binds or cross-threads then needs a scary amount of force to unjam it. I don't think it's going to damage my camera so I'll leave it with a high review for its performance to cost ratio. It does have the correct custom shape for the Canon EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens to avoid edge cropping.

It's good enough, but not perfection

It fits well, seems the right shape, and seems strong enough. However; it's shiny inside surface defeats the purpose somewhat. Also; I've been noticing some slight vignetting when UWA - acceptable but noticeable.

I sanded the inside with 60-grit and that seems to have fixed the glare for the most part; but it's still not the felt-interior that Canon hoods have. I did a glare test before/after and the 60-grit probably fixed 80% of it. It's good enough, but not perfection.

Almost as good as the Canon original at a fraction of the price. The only difference is the somewhat thinner feel of this one, however I don't feel it affects performance or impact protection in any significant way. Also the look is almost equally professional.
