WD VelociRaptor drives offer an unmatched combination of high performance and high reliability, perfect for workstations, high-end video and photo editing, low-end servers and performance enthusiast's systems. Comes with a 3.5-inch mounting frame for easy installation into today's high-performance systems and chassis. Ultra fast - Designed around a 10,000 RPM spin speed, these SATA 6 Gb/s drives include a 64 MB cache and deliver the ultimate performance for photo and video editing. Rock-solid reliability - With 1.4 million hours MTBF, these drives have the highest available reliability rating on a high capacity SATA drive. High capacity - State-of-the-art technology delivers a balance of high performance and high capacity perfect for data-intensive workloads that require large amounts of storage such as video editing, 3D rendering and scientific modeling. Ultra-cool operation Consumes less idle power and uses similar active power as the previous generation WD VelociRaptor, while offering higher capacity and performance. Advanced Format (AF) Technology adopted by WD and other drive manufacturers as one of multiple ways to continue growing hard drive capacities. AF is a more efficient media format that enables increased areal densities. IcePack mounting frame - The 2.5-inch hard drive is enclosed in a backplane-ready 3.5-inch mounting frame with a built-in heat sink that keeps this powerful little drive extra cool when installed in high-performance desktop chassis. NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit. Pre-emptive Wear Leveling (PWL) - Ensures reliability for applications that perform a high incidence of read/write operations at the same physical location on the disk. Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) - Optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis. Environmentally Conscious - In addition to being RoHS compliant, this generation of WD VelociRaptor also provides a halogen-free design.

I have been looking at this hard drive for at least a year and I'm glad I finally purchased it. I am using an SSD for the operating system etc and the Velociraptor is the hard drive with all my games' pictures, downloads etc. This thing is fast. I tested my old hard drive which is WD Black 7200RPM and the read speed is 70.07mb/s and the write speed is 68.42mb/s. The WD Velociraptor has a read speed of 187.5mb/s and write speed of 188.8mb/s. That is on sata 3GB (sata2) as my motherboard does not have sata 6GB (sata 3) which this drive can use. I have seen benchmark tests on sata 6GB and the speeds on the WD VelociRaptor 1 TB has the drive performing around 215 MB/s read and 205 MB/s write for sequential speeds. The VelociRaptor still comes no where close to the access times of a SSD drives but since the prices are still high on SSD drives it is a great alternative compared to the 7200RPM drives and also having the 1TB of hard drive space is a big plus. I am very pleased on how much faster games load and play and my computer is much faster all around using the WD Velociraptor.
Update: 4/6/14: Just a note. I have this drive installed in Dell Inspiron 3847 along with two other drives. The Raptor is in the drive caddie on the bottom of the case along with another drive. (The other drive is mounted in the spare 5.4 bay with a 3.5 adapter.) I ran into one small problem that I was aware of but didn't know if it would show up in this case or not. I check my system temps on occasion and on one check I found the Raptor was running at 135 F . That's a bit to hot for me and I mounted a small case fan to the right of the drive caddie and since there is a four pin fan slot on the MB right next to the caddie that is not used it plugged in rather nicely there. Temp dropped down to around 90 to 99 F when in use. Much better. The fan "pulls" the air off the drive caddie not blowing air into it. Reason for this is the case has a set of large holes under the front of the case for ventilation which are just forward of the drive caddie and this set up pulls air thru them over the drives and not blowing case air over them. Works out great and temps look much better now.
Very good hard drive with a IcePack mounting frame, 10 000 RPM, very fast. I install this drive for my games in my new computer, they do is job very well. I do the same thing with my first computer I built, with a SSD for my games, do not saw any difference, only little sound of the drive. The sound of the hard drive is 2 or 3 time louder of the WD Blue drive, not a big deal, I am comfortable with that!
If I compare the Read speed, on paper is about 170MBs for VelociRaptor(500GB) & 175MBs for WD Blue(1TB) & 540 for SSD Kingston Hyper X(480GB). I made a test with all 3 drive in game, the slower is the WD Blue couple seconds 30 to 60 seconds. The 2 other drive is about the same, but in paper this is not the case, the SSD drive must be faster. Western Digital made a very good hard drive, and the games I write on the drive is burned to drive, much safe do not lost anything on drive.
For people who do not want to ear any sound from the computer, install SSD drive, Noctua fan, a good case with sound damping materiel!
Thank you Amazone
The drive is the size of a mobile drive with large heat sinks making it standard for a hot-swap bay. It's running really quiet and no noticeable increase of internal computer heat.

I have used at least two Solid State Storage (SSD) disks as operating systems drive over the recent years. Now I've come to a conclusion that SSDs are a bit over-hyped, and also their 'premium' storage space (due to very high cost per GB) dictates that close attention such as regular tidying up is almost a must, which is in sharp contrast to HDD.
This Velociraptor is faster than the normal HDD and close to SDD on the speed scale, but without the idiosyncrasies of the SSD. Overall, keeps the right balance of faster drive access without demanding close attention.
I have now used this Velociraptor over 3 months and pleased with its performance and won't go back to SSD (until improved SSD features AND reduced cost convince me otherwise).
Mech HDD's still have a faster Sequential write speed for certain file sizes.
Easy to fit and set up. Has worked flawlessly since and temperature has never risen above 28C in a well ventilated Coolermaster HAF 922 Mid Tower Gaming Case. Virtually silent in operation.
Very loud but at that speed it is expected!
