Simply put, it is incredible.
My particular unit had some damage to the cabinet so I contacted the seller, OneCall. The cause of the damage was never completely determined, but the seller offered me many options as to how to proceed. I opted to keep the unit and a price adjustment was made. Now on to the sub's performance (which did not appear to have been adversely affected by the damage).
It is a beast. It hits hard, low, loud, and clean......not sure what else you could ask for. I did discover that placement is very important and a little experimentation can produce big gains in sound quality.
When I really crank it up, I have to dust the furniture afterward. It is in my "man cave," which is a 16x24 room with a drop ceiling. The vibration from the sub causes white particles from the drop ceiling to fall out during extended loud play. Fine by me.
If this beast is within your budget, and you like lots of low, clean bass, don't hesitate.....well worth the price.
Music was equally good, and since the sub has separate settings for listening types (as well as 90 degree phase adjustments) it was really easy to get fantastic low-end sound on different songs and music types --- she likes country, me not so much. Rock, some jazz. It all sounded great. Authoritative. Like it was easy to go low and not muddy the sound. Since a sub that big can punch you in the chest if you let it we found ourselves turning the volume down a bit and adjusting the crossover so it didn't become too much. Great buy for the money. Great sub.
My research in my price range pinpointed this subwoofer. Sound unseen, I gave it a try. Very glad I did.
I've had it 2 weeks now, and will update later.
As others have pointed out, the posts holding on the grille are flimsy. Mine arrived with 4 broken by FedEx. Velodyne says they're changing the design.
The documentation. Nearly useless. What happens with the presets after you use the auto EQ? Why Y-plug left and right RCA inputs as recommended? This is a $1000 subwoofer. Most people buying it want more information.
Keep reading, and I'll explain the EQ/preset interaction, courtesy of Velodyne customer service.
Velodyne customer service. They're as good as they say they are. New grille on its way to me. Other questions answered promptly.
The sound. Better than the MFW-15. The subwoofer gets out of the way when it should and sounds great when you want to watch a movie. There have been criticisms that the subwoofer tanks between 20 and 30 hz, and what the hell are they doing with all kinds of lowpass filters on the presets? Evidently, they're doing things right. They are engineers and all, you know. Subjectively, this thing rattles the couch when it should and behaves itself otherwise.
Features. The remote control and different profiles are very useful. What finally sold me on giving this box a try was being able to easily switch between what I want for music and what you want for movies. Mission accomplished.
If you use the auto-EQ, it will configure setting 3 (the jazz/classical setting).Read more ›
