Enhance your purchase
Rune Jenkins has a long-standing infatuation with anything from the supernatural world, and she's trying to hide it. If she doesn't, she angers her reckless twin brother Ryker, and starts feeling like her own sanity is slipping. But the closer she gets to Grey Malteer - an old friend who waves his fascination with fantasy like a flag - the harder it becomes to stifle her own interest. The supernatural suddenly invades their reality when other-worldly creatures come hunting for the three college students. With help from a mysterious savior Rune and Grey escape, but must follow Ryker's abductors into an alternate dimension, Eon, and discover their true identities. They are Venators, descendants of genetically enhanced protectors and sentries between Eon and Earth. In this world of fae, vampires, werewolves, and wizards, power is abundant and always in flux. Ryker is missing, and Rune and Grey are being set up as pawns in a very dangerous game. The three must find their way through and out of Eon, before it consumes them.

''Fast-paced plotting will appeal to readers searching for a thrill…recommend to older fans of fantasies like Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series.'' --Booklist
''A thrilling, beautifully written book about all things supernatural. Genetically-modified humans Rune and Grey must discover who they truly are in a world where they are feared for their abilities, despite the vampires, werewolves, and more inhabiting the land. This start of the series makes readers want more, and the powerful feeling of fantasy completely takes over while reading this book. Fans of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series or Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone series will surely appreciate Venators.'' --VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates)
"Devri Walls brings to life a gritty world with twists on well-known monsters and a sense of bloody danger that's often terrifying while also weaving in a calmness and wonder that finds the beauty of it all. Walls explores a journey of inner strength in Venators: Magic Unleashed, a gritty adventure that finds two lost people on the search for their destiny." -Seattle Book Review

What is a Venator you ask? A Venator is quite powerful as it turns out and is immune to vampire bites, fae magic, and werewolf venom - amongst other things. They are the enforcers of the law in another realm and beings to be feared. Except they are all but extinct in this other realm. Grey is beginning to discover his Venator abilities in the human world. While Rune knows something is boiling deep inside her but doesn't know what exactly.
And then, just like that the explosive action whisks the two into a dark fantasy world where all sorts of creatures dwell. Grey and Rune are ripped from their collegiate lives and taken to a land on the brink of war as different species vie for power.
In a race to get to the ruling council house Grey and Rune discover just how dangerous the place is. And Rune begins to see the shy, timid Grey in a much different light. Both Venators have a strong sense of right and justice and that puts them at odds with some of the ruling Council members.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment of this series and I can't wait to try out another of Devri Walls' books. Fantastically paced writing with humor, intrigue and adventure. You'll be asking for more too!
The plotline is good, not great, but it is good overall- Walls has set up room to grow, so I'm hopeful for future books to take this to the next level, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Character development was great. I'm not a huge fan of Rune as of yet, as I cannot really relate to her. I relate more to Grey, her male protagonist counterpart. I think Rune is a bit to angsty for my taste - but this is YA so that's to be somewhat expected. The dynamic between the characters is very well written, you can't help but go through this journey with them. I like Verida (spoiler alert - daughter of dracula, that's pretty cool!) the best so far. There is good chemistry between all the characters.
I love Walls' writing style, very descriptive and draws you in and takes you to the setting of this alternate dimension.
One thing I will say is that I would never have picked up this book on my own (I saw an ad for it on facebook) as I have no idea what a venator is, and unless you're well versed in Latin, I doubt anyone else would either. I think this could hurt gaining readership- I also am not sure if I'm saying it correctly in my head. Is it Vee-nay-ter, veh-neh-tor, veh-nay-tor? No idea, and google has differing opinions on this as well. It's not a huge drawback, but since it's the title of the book, I'd definitely like to see a glossary added in the next book, especially for any other creatures we may soon encounter.
Rune and Grey struggle to make sense of early college life, and that struggle suddenly makes sense as a fantasy world invades their dorm and pulls them into a new world that in some ways, feels a lot more like home. Complete with familial drama.
Eon is vibrant, with a deeply implied history, dark forests full of predators, and maze-like castles full of pompous lords who think they have all the answers. There are some excellent twists on a classic fantasy creatures, as well as some great new inventions I don't want to spoil!
I love this read. It's fast and full of charm, and I can't wait to pick up the next book!
Two worlds side by side our world were fairy tales are just that. And the other world where fairy tales came from.
Gray and Rune come face to face with the reality that fairy tales are a history of a world they never knew was a reality.
If you are looking for strong Characters that you can relate to with a supernatural twist, then this is the book to start with and count the days for the next in the line of books.
