Bj?rk (Linnea in Monet's Garden) offers an engaging view of Venice from the perspective of an affable Swedish girl visiting the city with her father. Brief chapters, usually two to three pages, follow the duo's wanderings through the city and dip into Venetian history, culture and legend. Childlike imagery dots Vendela's anecdotal narrative: arriving in Venice by boat at night is "like sailing into the middle of a play." And while Vendela is clearly caught up in all that is "magical" about this floating city, she makes down-to-earth observations, too. She notes the "masses of plastic bottles" in the canal and, bored on a visit to the Accademia Museum, she discovers that it's best to look "at what is happening along the bottom of the pictures.... There are often funny little details, even on sad paintings." Eriksson (who collaborated with Bj?rk on The Other Alice) animates this breezy travelogue with realistic illustrations that accurately capture everything from architectural details to facial expressions; her style sits well alongside the numerous photographs and reproductions included here. Grade 4-7-What Bj?rk's Linnea in Monet's Garden (R & S, 1987) accomplished in revealing the beauty of French Impressionism, this book achieves in unveiling the magic of Venice. Vendela lives in Stockholm, sometimes called the "Venice of the North," and her fondness for the copies of the magnificent Venetian horse statues at St. Mark's have created in her a desire to experience the Italian city firsthand. Thirty short chapters describe her weeklong sojourn there with her father. Information on glassblowing and gondola construction is presented as naturally as Vendela's disgust at the slaughtered animals in the market and her delight at tiramisu and almond-flavored milk. Photographs; reproductions of paintings, postcards, and ticket stubs; and other realia are paired with Eriksson's skillful watercolors. Adept at both figures and scenery, the artist captures the character of the city-the mystery of the moonlit palaces; the omnipresent cats, pigeons, and flapping laundry; the dazzle and scale of St. Mark's Square. A map of places visited adorns the endpapers. End matter includes tips for travelers, historical tidbits, a time line, and a list of of guidebooks and adult fiction. A must-read for armchair and actual travel enthusiasts, the book will also provide accurate and easily accessed data for reports.

Vendela in Venice is an outstanding children's book for teaching your children about Venice. If you are traveling to Venice, I recommend reading it with your children before visiting, but it's also great for reminiscing afterwards. I have loved the book for years and have given it as a gift.
On a search at Amazon for books about Venice for children and adolescents, I couldn't get this book to come up, so I hope that Amazon will fix that. There aren't many books for children about Venice that have the great details, photos, and history that this one does.

I took a short trip to Venice this summer with my 7 year old daughter. This book had her so excited to go visit Venice in the first place and then she was thrilled when she found references from the book during our walks of Venice. The book is a fun read and is filled with all sorts of interesting facts about Venice and it's history. It became our tour book during our 4 day trip and it was excellent. Can't recommend this book highly enough.

My seventeen year old and I read this book together when she was in the 3rd grade, and we still have fond memories of the absolute magic that this book created for us. We just came back from a trip to Europe, and were able to have this book come alive with a visit to Venice. I based a lot of my 'sights to see' from this book, and was excited to find almost all of the locales, except for the sweet shop that no longer exists. This is an enchanting book, beautifully illustrated, with Vendela's voice ringing clear in every page. You can feel her excitement, as well as see it in her expressions. One of our highlights was being able to see the original horses in the museum in St. Mark's Cathedral that Vendela was so excited about - awesome! The nine year old girls who found this boring really missed out on a lot; hard to believe that no even one found it at least interesting After all these years, we are ordering this book as a keepsake. Happy reading if you purchase this book - you will be glad you did!

Vendela in Venice: First-rate!

Vendela in Venice is a wonderful, "state-of-the-art" children's book. My daughter's 3rd grade teacher was particularly interested in Italy, and used the book for half the year for reading as well as art project inspiration (children re-created the gold horses in St. Mark's Square). The book is beautifully illustrated, and also includes real photographs of Venice - the graphics are stunning. The story is great, it is the story of Vendela, who visits Venice with her father (who says, " ..every child should go to Venice, because Venice is a fairy-tale city."). The book is packed with information about the city - from art & architecture to glass-blowing, history of Venice and the problem that Venice is facing currently (sinking!). The story is told from Vendela's perspective (she is around nine or ten years old), and so amusing - it is fun to read. All the great information is given along with the story of her trip and the things that happen to her (for instance, the time she gets a fish bone stuck in her throat and they have to pay a visit to the emergency room). I've bought two copies so far, and I'll be picking up more for birthday presents throughout the year - terrific book!

This is the best child's book I have seen so far. I read it to my 7 year old son and I loved it as much as he did. I have been to Venice and I learned a lot of new things that I did not know. The story is interesting in a travelogue sort of way and the illustrations are wonderful and varied. The only similar book that comes close would be The Three Golden Keys about Prague. As a previous reviewer stated it would be great if there was a book about every city like this. Although a child's book it is quite substantial, beautifully produced, and well worth the money.

This book was read and reviewed for a mother-daughter book club that I attend. It's a book club of six, nine-year old girls with their respective mothers. None of the girls liked this book. They all found it rather boring.
The mothers and I can understand how the girls could find this book dry, but it was highly informative and the girls learned a great deal about Venice. We all agreed that we wanted to see Venice one day. This book was very thorough in explaining the history and traditions of Venice. I personally liked that quality.
We read another book a few months ago entitled "The Diary of Melanie Martin". It was a book about a young girl's travels in Italy. The girls in the book club enjoyed that one much more because they were able to get into the thoughts of the main character. While with this book, they got more information on Venice than on the character. I'm sure if Vendela's adventures were more exciting than informative, they would have enjoyed the book more.
