From the Back Cover
No one needs to push Nikki Boyd to excel on the Tennessee Missing Persons Task Force. The case of her own missing sister, still unsolved after ten years, is the driving force in her work. When a Polaroid photo of a missing girl shows up at a crime scene, Nikki quickly recognizes similarities to the past. The closer she gets to the abductor, the more she feels this case has become personal, and she is not the hunter . . . but the hunted.
With this explosive first book in The Nikki Boyd Files, award-winning author Lisa Harris takes you on a fast-paced pursuit of justice that will have you holding your breath until the heart-stopping finish.

Vendetta begins with Nikki and her widowed friend Tyler rock climbing. During the course of the book, Nikki is startled to realize she is beginning to have feelings for her best friend's grieving husband. Vendetta is a suspense/thriller, not a romance. However, there is a slow-building shift from friendship to something more between Nikki and her friend Tyler that adds to the story and makes Nikki a more relate-able character. Nikki and Tyler have to cut their outing short when Nikki gets word that a teenage girl has gone missing nearby.
Nikki is shocked to realize that the methods of the abductor of the teenager Bridget are very similar to those of the Angel Abductor. "Nikki felt her heart stop as she picked up the photo in the evidence bag...It was a Polaroid photo of Bridget...It was his signature. One she hadn't seen at a crime scene for ten years...she stood there, the photo frozen in her hand. Terrified. Terrifed he was out there, mocking her." As the abductor begins to toy with Nikki, she wonders if she will find Bridget before it's too late. If Bridget isn't found, if she dies, it will be her fault...again.
I actually read books one and two out of order. Missing (book two) was great, but I loved Vendetta more. Maybe because as a mother of teen girls myself, the case of a missing teen had me very interested in what was going to happen next. Nikki's search for Bridget's abductor through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was exciting, and although being a series, you know Nikki will make it out alive, I wondered if she would make it out unscathed.
I would recommend Vendetta and the rest of the Nikki Boyd Files series to fans of Terri Blackstock or Mary Higgins Clark. People die in the story, but it's not graphic. There's a light romance, but it is suitable for anyone who likes suspense books, preteens included. Nikki is a Christian and prays throughout the book for guidance, but Vendetta is not preachy. I thoroughly enjoyed it and read the next book, Pursued, as well. I can't wait for Vanishing Point (book four) to be published!
Certainly this premise has been used many times before in suspense stories, however, it's Harris' writing and development of Nikki through the story that makes this novel hard to put down. There is a romantic thread involving Nikki and old friend Tyler Grant that starts almost immediately but once again, Harris has a way of exploring it's development that makes it very readable.
The story is paced well, the identity of the abductor and his motives are a surprise which add an additional layer to the story and the series. I particularly enjoyed Harris' attention to detail in describing the Smoky Mountains Park. It was very easy for me to picture myself walking alongside Nikki and her team as they searched for the culprit and the missing girl.
There are a number of elements that have been setup for the rest of the series: some of Nikki's past cases, her history with Tyler and his deceased wife, Katie, and the circumstances behind her death.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Harris develops Nikki Boyd in the second novel of the series.
