Vengeance 101 is a great introductory novella to bring readers into Louisa Lo’s “Vengeance Demon” series. Not only does it provide the background on the series’ main character, Megan Aequitas, it tells how this quirky one-of-a-kind Vengeance Demon and Trickster hybrid in the supernatural world. As such, she has been up against the odds her entire life. She is trying to prove she can handle the duties of a Vengeance Demon, with a Trickster twist.
Louisa Lo has shown she is a dedicated author in both the “Vengeance Demon” series and her new “A Royal Apocalypse” series. She is intent on placing as much accuracy in her writing as is possible in a fantasy series, with her own exhaustive research and seeking out experts in fields she does not know well. Her writing style is truly magical, with strong characters, superior dialogue, and stories that resonate on multiple levels throughout. Her books are well-written, skillfully edited, and capably proofed; something few writers in today’s independent author, self-published novel, marketplace bother with. Too many authors think running their book through MS Word’s Spelling and Grammar Checker is all that is required to edit a manuscript. Louisa Lo is not one of them.
Vengeance 101 is an extremely well-written short story that prepares the reader for the series that follows. As she has shown in her other works, she is a talented author that knows how to make an urban fantasy world seem real. The imagery in this supernatural world is wonderful, the characters are extremely human for a bunch of mythical demons and tricksters, the dialogue is realistic, and the storyline is as believable as a fantasy story can ever be.
Louisa Lo is a truly talented storyteller with a lot of delightful, well-thought-out and interesting stories to tell. I look forward to reading them all.
I’ll be completely honest by saying this one wasn’t my favourite of the short stories in the Vengeance Demon world, but it really was a nice look at the earlier days in the story. We knew about the issues Megan faced, and it was nice to finally get a look at how it was for her before all of the drama started to truly unfold.
In all honesty, it’s left me wanting little short stories for many of the characters, as I would love little snapshots like this for many of my favourites. It’s so nice to get to see more of them, especially in a situation that is not quite as dire as that in the main story. Oh, there is enough in this short story to ensure your attention is grabbed, but it is rather tame when compared to the rest of the series. As I said, it makes for a great introduction.
Now, I go back to my impatient waiting for the next book – because, damn, I’m excited for this series and Vengeance 101 simply worked to remind me of why I’m so addicted.
I loved this short prequel to the vengeance demon series! Megan’s start in school is shown in more detail and her character is questioned at every turn. But she’s serious about vengeance and she is determined to show them she’s not just capable, but an excellent choice. If you have started the series, then you should definitely read this little insight into Megan’s life!
