As I have stated in the past, I am a total cover whore and will buy books based on the covers alone! Shallow perhaps but I am who I am!
Vengeance Born did not disappoint.
Vengeance Born was everything I was expecting and more.
Vengeance Born is a keeper!
Vengeance Born is a fantasy romance wrapped in mystery, intrigue, conflict between races, and mystical powers.
Oh and hot, sexy (and naked) Kalan. Annika is pretty awesome too (hello the cover) but I'm concentrating on my Kalan crush!
The creative world building and attention to detail that has been put into this story is extensive and made it a pleasure to read.
The writing is smooth, the relationships between characters is real and unforced and well worth the 5 hour non stop read.
Not only will Vengeance Born be sitting on my keeper shelf but author Kylie Griffin will be added to my list of favourites along side the likes of Nalini Singh and Jeaniene Frost.
A 5 Star read ~<;]
Annika, is a half-breed of human and demon; who is also a healer, and has lived all her life in a demon world, run by her demon father who hated her. In her world, the demons (Na Reish), use humans as blood-slaves, but half-human half-demon (Na Chi) children are looked upon with hatred. Annika thinks of herself as the only Na Chi, as others were killed at birth. She was kept alive by her father, the King, to torture her as revenge. Annika dreams of escaping, and grasping a chance at possible freedom, she helps an imprisoned human Light Blade warrior to escape, with the promise of helping her.
Kalan, the Light Blade, agrees to help Annika, but he distrusts her as he knows she is a demon, and he has been brought up to hate all demons. Annika used her healing powers to help Kalan, and then helps him escape his imprisonment. The beginning of the story is about their escape, running for their lives from the Na'Reish warriors who are searching for them. Kalan, is an honorable man, as well as a strong and handsome warrior. He finds it difficult to trust Annika, and has a hard time hiding his dislike for what she is. At times he finds himself sympathetic to the life she has lived, as they learn more about each other during their travel to the human land. Annika is truly a warm and giving person, but has known what it's like to be hated all of her life.Read more ›
Annika is one of the most loved characters I read about in a while. Here you have a woman who has struggled with her identity among the Na'Chi and the Na'Reish; she has struggled with an abusive life finding no love or acceptance in anyone save for one human, a human woman who solely believed that Annika was meant for the greater good of all Na'Chi (half-breeds). It is heart breaking to see her struggle; but what a thrill it is to see her overcome everyone's doubts including her own.
I loved this
The overall story arc is somewhat predictable, which is my only real negative. There are however some nice surprises along the way, and I particularly enjoyed seeing what happened once Annika found herself within the humans' city. That's when things truly get emotional and riveting, as racism, hatred, and old hurts threaten everything Annika and Kalan hold dear. I even ended up reading that part of the book a second time--it's one of those fictions where it's fascinating to go back and look at what came before knowing how the rest of the story ends. I'm certainly glad to have discovered Griffin's Light Blade series.
