This is a play that features only two characters - a male director and a female actress who is auditioning for a part. When staged, it should take around 90 minutes. The dialogue is strong and the plot is quite interesting - they are performing a play (it is her audition) while also talking to each other, breaking roles, debating motives and even switching parts. Gender roles and sexuality are discussed in depth here. Some reviewers have said this is an S&M play - I have never seen an S&M play, but going with Justice Stewart's definition, I would say it is not an S&M play.

It's a complicated read and definitely should be seen rather than read. There is a Roman Polanski film version of this that I haven't seen yet. The key for this to be successfully performed is in the selection of the actors - the writing will not carry it along, as having only two characters on a stage is usually quite difficult to pull off.

I read this play for class and instantly fell in love, it's so powerful and well written. I then had the honor of portraying Vanda for a friend's directing II play after I suggested it to her. This will forever be one of my favorite plays.

I would recommend this play to anyone with a high literary intelligence, with a good sense of humor, and is not easily disturbed by masochism.

I read the play not too long after seeing it produced by the Albany Capital Rep theatre. It is a great play with a bit of a feminist twist. The female lead is as strong a character as I've seen in a while.

This is a terrific, intense show that I highly recommend to theatre nerds or just anyone who loves a great story. This is a bucket list role for me as an actor!

Fabulous adaptation. I wish it was staged more often.
