Against this backdrop of turmoil and unrest, the Peacetrooper brother of Commonwealth Senator Neela Kane has gone missing. Intelligence places him on Karak, an Independent desert world, and Operative Dante Zo is dispatched to bring him home—or confirm his demise. Quinn, employee of the shadowy Seryn Agency, is also headed to Karak, where rumours abound of a fierce and sudden tribal war centred on a mysterious woman with uncanny power: Venus, the Seryn’s most dangerous rogue agent.
Meanwhile, on Karak itself, other forces bring their pieces into play. Tasha, a young but mercurial assassin, is unleashed to kill the foreign witch and bring peace back to her home. But with a renegade Titan mercenary at her side, Venus will let nothing stand in the way of her plan—and the conquest of Karak is just the beginning. With a world in the firing line, and the fate of the entire galaxy at stake, only one question remains:
In the name of duty, is there anything that can’t be sacrificed?

So the scope of the novel was more contained than Ascension Point, but I actually thought Venus Rising was even better as a result. The writing was tight, the characters were good - with some ambiguous/complex figures - and the action was exciting.
And as with Ascension Point, the epilogue/postlogue gives some nice teasers for how things could unravel ahead of the next story; including a nice twist that I didn't see coming.
I liked Ascension Point, and Venus Rising is even better in my view. I heartily recommend it.
Yes, i do miss Abe and i dont know if its possible to recreate another character like him (may Abe R.I.P.) but i do look forward for the next installment of this excellent series.
thank you, Dan Harris, for such a great stories. make me want to live in this galaxy.

In contrast to Ascension Point, this book has virtually all the action set on a single planet, Karak, a desert world with more than a little resemblance to Arrakis from Frank Herbert's Dune. In fact, the story itself is very much in that style, melding sci fi with a developing culture and exploring what falls out. Thankfully, Harris doesn't get bogged down in the details of quasi-religion which for me always detracted from Herbert's books. If you felt that the first book involved a bit too much rushing around the galaxy, then I think you'll find this one more up your street.
Add into that some espionage, detective work and the odd fight scene and you've got another great sci fi thriller.
