Review

Blogcritics.org
“The book is valuable for the medical, nutritional and ‘lifestyle’ advice it gives to women who would more fully experience this important, but fleeting, seven to 10 days in their lives each month.…An invaluable book for women of any age…Essential if women want to understand their bodies.”

Publishers Weekly online “Review Annex,” starred review, 5/26/08
”Booth writes sympathetically and knowledgeably about the female struggle for self-knowledge…using simple, clutter-free metaphors to break down the ‘dance’ of the female cycle…It’s refreshing to find a self-help in which ‘the secret’ refers to knowledge; Booth’s belief in its power to overcome suffering is admirable and infectious. Any woman who feels her body is beyond her understanding should find Booth’s first book eye-opening and empowering.”

Kentuckiana Healthy Woman
“Offers a way for women to understand the changes in their bodies through simple and elegant metaphors.”

WashingtonPost.com, “The Checkup” health blog
“Booth keeps it simple; she doesn't take readers too far outside the mainstream in her recommendations…But the thing I like best about The Venus Week is that it shifts focus away from the negative aspects of the menstrual cycle and encourages appreciation of the beauty and power of the whole, intricately crafted system.”

Louisville Voice-Tribune
“Most patients have to wait for their next doctor’s appointment to find answers to questions about what’s going on inside their bodies. However, Dr. Rebecca Booth is putting information at women’s fingertips through her first book.”

Midwest Book Review, 8/08
“Reveals how to manage a body's weekly hormonal shifts to best advantage…Any women's health collection will find this an intriguing, hopeful study.”

Share Guide: The Holistic Health Magazine, 11/08
“Reveals the surprising ways you can manage your body’s weekly hormonal shifts to your best advantage, no matter what your age or stage in life.”

Sage, 3/09
“Offers detailed advice.”

Star, 2/16/09
“A revolutionary new book.”

Santa Monica, April 2009
“Discover your inner Venus with Rebecca Booth’s The Venus Week.”

This book is easy to read, well-researched and chock full of information for women of all ages... from pubescence to menopause and beyond. Using attractive metaphors borrowed from Roman mythology, Dr. Booth explains the facts our mothers never told us about our hormone changes, both monthly, cyclicly, and the "macro" changes that occur throughout our lives. She explains with freshness the hormonal dance that occurs during the "Venus" week, which creates a testosterone-fueled libido spike just prior to ovulation -- every month... critical information for young girls coming of age. For women in their 20's and 30's, she offers advice on enhancing fertility ... on how to identify the physiologic signs of the "venus" or ovulatory phase... how to understand better and manage the two-week "minerva" phase post-ovulation. The later chapters on peri-menopause and beyond contribute positively to the national discussion about HRT, adding wisdom and fresh data to a subject often viewed with aversion or reluctance. Throughout this lively read are nutritional, health and beauty tips -- as they relate to the hormonal interplay; particularly current is Dr. Booth's advice about eating... and she offers innovative recipes that align with the "Venus" lifestyle, that are nutritious (low-carb, high fiber, high in nutrients) but also taste good! Overall, an insightful, well-informed celebration of Venus... of womanhood.

My wife handed me "The Venus Week" and said, "Read this." When I finished the book, I wished I had read it years ago, for it gave me an enormous appreciation for my wife -- and all women. Much of what I find to be puzzling about women is made imaginable and within my grasp through the clear and insightful writing of Dr. Booth. She moves "hormonal" from the pejorative to the descriptive; offering the magical interplay of a woman's hormones as something to be celebrated rather than endured -- or ridiculed. If I had a daughter, I would want her to read this book, and I would want her to know that I had read it, so she would know that I do have a framework for understanding her. This book is far more than a medical thesis on female hormones -- though it is grounded in sound scholarship. It is a handbook for womanhood. I recommend it to every man.

As a happily married male, Dr. Booth's book definitely brought out an unrealized and needed renewal as well as a greater appreciation of the total woman. Of course, I am referring to both the inner and outer beauty.

It was an easy read for someone like me without a medical degree and the vivid testimonials/stories that she shares with the reader keep things light and humorous as well as heartfelt and even a little sad. The scientific/clinical information paired throughout with the true patient cases not only draw you in, but almost makes it challenging to stop reading.

This is definitely something any man who is in a married or dating relationship with a woman should take the time to read if he truly wants to understand his spouse/girlfriend better and to be sensitive to her emotional and physicial cycles.

Best of luck and continued success to Dr. Booth. Hopefully she will write a follow-up in the near future.

The Venus Week is an incredibly liberating read. No longer do I feel a victim to my hormones. I always knew I had this group of days - I call my skinny days - where everything just seems to click. I actually look forward to changes in my cycle because I now know what is coming and why. What a refreshing way to think about the shifts in mood - they actually have a purpose. I have begun to use Dr. Booth's diet and supplement tips as well and I feel like they make a difference. Now I have a great excuse to indulge in my bit of dark chocolate in the evenings - to give me a little boost of Venus! Kudos to this doctor - who is focusing on wellness - not just disease.

Dr. Booth is my gynecologist. She told me that she has been working on the research and writing of this book for a very long time. She wanted to help women understand what is going on with their bodies throughtout the decades. The book is excellent and I recommend it for any age. I plan to buy and give copies to several of my friends from ages 20-60. Thank you Dr. Booth.

Dr. Booth delivered my 2nd son 5 1/2 years ago, so I've been getting the information laid down in this book from brief encounters as her patient. I was thrilled and not so terribly surprised when I found that she had published.

A wonderful read. A must read. I wish I had this when I was a teen instead of just now in my late 30s.

I've learned so much from this book. Wish I knew all this at 15 instead of suffering into my 30's. Knowledge gives us power. The author doesn't pretend to have all the answers, which is the honest approach. She gives great advice for working around the things we can't change and provides suggestions to improve issues that do respond well to help, whether that be diet, rest, exercise, supplements, or even cautiously considered hormone replacement. I have put in place key steps already (eg. cut out coffee & high GI grains). The effects of insulin resistance on our bodies and hormones were really brought to my attention in this book. Worth reading just for that. Overall, this book is easy to follow and very interesting. I highly recommend it.
