Weaved through this first book in a new southern cozy series are references to the island families with ancestors who survived the 1900 hurricane, the graceful historical homes with mysteries of their own, and a romance between Shelby, a New York Times bestselling author who returns to the island, and Boone, the hunky architect who renovated the historical island home she now owns. Boone who serves as Shelby's hero is what a hero should be: warm, friendly, intelligent, and sexy.
Shelby and her friends are fun--and funny--as they share girl talk and the occasional bottle of wine. With irrepressible wit, she faces life after divorce. She's more than a match for a resident ghost--who may or may not be haunting her gorgeous new home--a wandering dog named Charmin' and the anxieties of falling in love. Looking for a fun read? Here it is!
Ms. Wheeler has the genteel southern voice and way of living down pat. It's a fun read with wonderful, quirky characters who will entertain you with their shenagins. Enjoyed it.

If you are looking for a light, breezy summer read, The Verandah by Loretta Wheeler is just the ticket. Set in Galveston Island on the Gulf coast of Texas, the novel resonates with local color and fun. Renowned author Shelby Alexander returns to her childhood summer place to meet up with old friends and move into an apartment styled just for her by architect gorgeous guy, Boone, who would also love, one day, to live in the beautiful, sprawling home.
Shelby’s successful, stylish friends help her navigate her period of adjustment as she gets used to her newly divorced situation and contemplates a relationship with the handsome but conflicted Boone. Adopted by a chipper dog named Charmin’ and enticed by the possibility of ghostly spirits inhabiting her apartment, Shelby laughs and cries her way to the conclusion.
Author Loretta Wheeler draws the reader in with her perfect-pitch vernacular and eye for setting details. The Verandah is romance with a Southern accent that falls gently on the eyes and ears. A fast, fun read!
