Having worked as a correctional officer at a state prison, I can tell you that these rhetorical strategies do work. I used many of them on a daily basis and with much success. However, due to the broad presentation of these principles, I feel that this book will only benefit those people who have very little natural talent at verbal persuasion. That's not a bad thing, it's simply my opinion that if you have any natural inclination to put yourself in the other person's shoes and to act with their best interest at heart, then you probably already know intuitively what this book teaches. If, however, your first instinct, when put in a confrontational or adversarial situation, is to verbally attack the other person or to become defensive and closed minded, then you will gain something from this book. Physical Judo is all about defending yourself while doing little if any harm to your opponent. Applying that principle to verbal altercations is the main premise of Verbal Judo. While there may not be any magic bullet tactics put forth in this work, I believe there are skills that can be developed with the help of this book. Whatever your particular verbal acumen, you will find some benefit from the strategies discussed in Verbal Judo. As a side note, if you are easily annoyed by typos and editing errors, you may want to take a valium before reading. This particular edition is rife with repeated sentences and grammatical errors, especially the last half. It's almost as if the editor gave up half way through the book. How this sort of hack work made it into a second printing, is a mystery to me. My high school English teacher would have stroked out by the sixth chapter.

This could have been another one of those books where the "Professor" outlines his course and plods through it, chapter after chapter, until we reach the last page. Instead, Dr. Thompson translated his Verbal Judo principles into stories, thus employing an entertaining method to convey his philosophy to the reader.

The book's fictional characters Mike and George discuss their ideas about writing a book about Verbal Judo, and the reader is allowed to view these discussions. Each chapter has three subheadings. "The Challenge" presents one of the Verbal Judo tactics, followed by "The Encounter," where the tactic is taught through the use of a story. "The Lesson" sums it all up for us. Seeing the tactic used during The Encounter section allows one to picture how it could be successfully employed, an excellent way to learn.

Though Verbal Judo originally focused on those in law enforcement, over the years it has been demonstrated to work in any profession, as well as during any encounter you may have in your life. Verbal Judo is simply a tool, something everyone can use to enhance their communication skills. It teaches you how important words are when dealing with any conflict, as well as guiding you to modify your own behavior in the way you see and approach conflict. This is definitely a book that can help anyone.

I prefer his book, “Verbal Judo the gentle art of persuasion”. Many of the stories from that book are retold in a different way in this book. There are only a few new stories that didn’t really improve my understanding of the technique after having read his other book. This book provides a list of 16 maxims summarized at the end, which is helpful. On the other hand, “the gentle are of persuasion” is written more like a workshop than a continuous story and for me was much more informative. It’s almost like this is an overview or introduction and “gentle art” provides the meat of the matter. This book is definitely worth a read if you’re new to Verbal Judo.

better for the average person.

Dr. Thompson's book is an excellent 'tool' for the 'toolbox' for dealing with difficult people. Granted his techniques do not work on 'all people, all the time', but I believe they will work on most folks, most of the time. I have used (and continue to use) his recommended techniques in various high and low stress situations and have had more successes than failures. Dr. Thompson's recommendations/techniques for de-escalating situations and 'derailing' some peoples 'rants' do indeed work.
I highly recommend this book.

It does go over some basic principles for mirroring statements, not becoming emotionally involved in a situation, etc. I think it would be good if you've not had any training or familiarity with this type of interaction. I didn't care for the format of the book; the entire book is written as dialogue. It's alright, it just wasn't what I expected. It's not a "say/do these things and not these" type of reference. It's much more general and not very specific in that way.
