5.0 out of 5 stars >>Review of the 500GB Version!<<
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 5, 2010
As far as I know, this is the 1st review of the 500GB version of the Verbatim CLONE! All the other reviews are for the 320GB & 250GB models. I had already owned the 250GB version of Verbatim CLON USB Portable Exterior Hard Drive & was very happy with it. When it came time to purchase another one, I almost bought the 320 GB model because of the lack of reviews. I'm glad I purchased the 500GB version. Just as quiet, no excessive heat,(doesn't even get warm) & the same transfer speed of my 250GB model. Even if you're looking for an exterior Hard Drive for your Desktop computer....this is the way to go!!!! Most that take a plugin power supply will get very warm & heat is your worst enemy. Plus, If your power supply goes bad you can't use it. All models of the Verbatim CLON are powered by your (*just one*) USB slot. Because of this, you don't need to install any software to get this drive to work. Just plug it in to any computer running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, or even a Mac & it's ready to drag & drop folders just like a Internal Hard Drive. The actual drive inside the plastic case is a 2.5 Toshiba hard drive. The Verbatim CLON will backup your entire Hard Drive except for the partitions (as long as you use the correct software).

For those of you that have planned on purchasing the 320GB version, I'd think seriously about buying this 500GB model. It's only a few dollars more & you can never have to much storage. Actually, I purchased mine directly from Amazon.com for a little less than I had paid for my 250GB version. As others have said, "This drive is all business" with just one blue light that let's you know it's running. The light flashes when you transfer data.

WARNING>>>> Verbatim leaves the impression that the installed software (Nero BackItUp 4 Essentials) will work with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 or MAC...it won't!!!!! If you're running Windows 2000 you'll have to go online & get "BackItUp 2 Essentials" if you want to use a backup software. This was very important to me because after July 2010 Microsoft will no longer support Windows 2000 at all. This means you won't be able to get the Service Pack 4 (SP4) update files any longer. Without these files you can't install most programs. The included software on the Verbatim doesn't support Windows 7, or MAC OS either. The NERO Software comes on the Hard Drive & isn't on a CD.

To sum things up... this is about as reliable exterior hard drive as you'll find, plus it's only the size of an I-Phone & you can easily put it in a shirt pocket & plug it into almost any other computer. Even it's transfer speed is faster than most costing $15.00-$40.00 more. These drives are so small & reasonably priced that I'll probably purchase another one in the near future. (My 3rd one):) Great Drive_A+++, Poor Software! That being said, the main thing when it comes to these portable exterior Hard Drives is reliability & transfer speed. You can usually find some other backup software for almost nothing or FREE. You can't really blame Verbatim on the software issues....but NERO is the problem!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: A couple of people have said this drive runs hot. I've had 2 & have recommended it to friends & none of them even really gets warm...trust me. Tell'ya what, go to your local Office Depot, Best Buy, etc & buy one. Let it run for 3 days & feel it for any heat. Most stores will allow you to return it for a Full Refund. Just say you're not happy with it. Then come back to Amazon to place your order. To say this drive runs hot is absurd & someone has a "hidden" agenda. BTW: Verbatim has extended the factory warranty to a WHOPPING 7 YEARS on their website. The longest warranty for any Exterior Hard Drive I know of!!!!! For as transfer speed you can go to YouTube & see a speed test against it's competition. Facts are Facts. Don't let some mislead you!:)
