When I first received my CLON 320, it appeared not to work when I first connected it to my computer, as my system failed to recognize it. I wrote to Verbatim and the very next morning I received a response from not one, but two technical advisers. They offered several things I needed to check to try and resolve the problem. I sent them a copy of my system hardware and configuration and then followed their advise. I came to realize it was my installed USB card had a bad port. Actually a simple fix. Once I changed the CLON to a different port, it immediately worked perfectly. What is so important here, is the rapid response and detailed concern Verbatim displayed towards my situation.
I will never hesitate to purchase any Verbatim product.
But later on I was experimenting and changed the extension name of a 15GB file. No problem. Then I tried to change it back and the drive light flashed for a solid ten minutes, but the file still wasn't renamed. I stopped all of the services that might have been referring to the renamed file but the problem remained; there was just no way I could rename it. I finally had to unplug the drive, plug it back in, delete the renamed file and then replace it. So the drive may be buggy. Not sure yet. It may have been that, for whatever reason, the initial renaming involved nothing more than updating an entry in the FAT table, but the second renaming for some reason was a kind of copy-and-then-rename operation.
It came formatted as FAT32, which was no good for me (that means your largest file can be no larger than 4 GB), but a quick format to NTFS fixed that. The web site had easy instructions on how to do this and was helpful.
The drive is tinier than tiny, makes no sound that I can detect, and doesn't get hot. I got a drive case that is almost too big for it, so there's plenty of room for the very short USB cable that comes with the drive. You may want to get a longer cable (one end has the "larger" style of mini-USB connector so don't assume that any old cable will do).
If the renaming of very large files is the only problem I encounter I'll be reasonably happy. This is a huge drive in a very tiny package, very portable, and only cost maybe $25 more than drives of the same capacity that are three times its size and weight.
It's sleek and small and seems solidly built: slides easily into the smaller (even the smallest sometimes) pocket of a briefcase or backpack with nothing to catch on.
It's pretty much silent--the only indicator it's on the small light at the end--and runs cool.
It's as fast as one would expect it to be and I've had no trouble transferring all types of files: documents, photos, music.
I can't say anything about the backup software as I use it on Macs. I had to reformat it which was quickly and effortlessly done--a matter of a few seconds. It then simply appears as another volume.
It comes provided with a USB cable but it's very short (about 18") so if you need longer you'll have to purchase a separate one. I happen to prefer the short, especially for a portable drive that I'll be using mostly with a laptop and will be stuffing in a backpack.
There's nothing that makes it stand out either for good or bad, at least not so far, save that it does seem a bit more solidly built than some cheap portables. So far, so good.
Cons: I can not use it in my laptop unless I use a dual USB power. I had to reformat the drive before I was able to use it. If given a choice I will get a Western Digital instead of this HD.
