It's hard to call Det. Sgt. Kathy Kolla and Chief Insp. Brock a team, since they work independently and don't often communicate, yet their sleuthing is smooth and efficient as they hunt down the killer of a prominent architect's wife in the latest in Maitland's sophisticated series (The Malcontenta, etc.). Charles Verge, owner of the London practice bearing his name, has suddenly gone missing, putting him under immediate suspicion of doing in his ambitious wife just before plans are unveiled for a controversial new prison. The police also focus on the activities of rival architect Sandy Clarke, until he too is found dead, an apparent suicide leaving a dubious "confession" on his computer screen. Kathy does most of the legwork in this intensive search, going first to the north of England and then to Barcelona where Charles may have been sighted, while Brock is back at headquarters in London directing an inquiry into the firm's shady finances. Maitland, himself an architect, provides vivid insight into the dog-eat-dog world of designing government buildings and also shows us the "nasty end of police business," in the modern forensics lab complete with high-tech gadgetry. Eventually, the pieces of the puzzle fit together in a grisly and unsettling resolution.

Another winner from Australia's top detective story novelist. No idea here why it's taken this riveting sixth in the Brock and Kolla series so long to make its way to America. But believe me, with Maitland's gifts as a writer and plotter, the wait was well worth it.

The story opens with the world-famous London architect Charles Verge failing to show up for his firm's vastly important presentation to a delegation of visiting Chinese. When his number two goes looking for him, he finds Verge's wife dead in her bed and no sign anywhere of Verge himself.

Alive? Dead? Murdered? Or murderer? Four months pass and Scotland Yard has yet to find its first clue about what's happened to Verge. Which is becoming more and more embarrassing. Time to turn over the case all London's talking and conjecturing about to the sleuthing team of Brock and Kolla. And the only tip they and their team have to work with comes from a British couple who say they think they may have seen Verge in Barcelona. Well, at least, it's somewhere to start. Come along for the ride. Lots of ups and downs and weird twists and turns and never a dull moment.

An intriguing whodunnit, written by an architect about an architect who disappears- is he alive or dead? To find the answer, Brock and Kathy have to follow several false leads. The chapters are written from the point of view of different characters, which I found interesting and successful. Great twist at the end, even though a wee bit far-fetched. Or maybe not...

So far the story is well written and enjoyable at 30 percent in. I'm writing to say that the proof readers are not doing their job. I'm on the fourth misspelling that changes the sentence. Latest example is Surely you're not suggesting that this has some HEARING on what happened on the
twelfth of May. That should have been BEARING to make sense. Are the proofers really reading for content as well?

Maitland's writing is good with developed characters but I found the pace of the story to drag a bit toward the end. The ending was too contrived for my taste, and I could see how it would end. I would like to read more of Maitland's work to see if this ending is characteristic of his works as a whole.

I do not write reviews normally because I believe that taste is an individual matter. However, I feel that the author has been badly let down by the poor production quality of the kindle offering of this book. There are substantial dislocations in the flow of the text (drag and drop problem??), line breaks are haphazard and the dialogue suffers in places because of poor layout design.

I really enjoy my kindle but cheap or shoddy production such as this, that would be unlikely to hit the shelves in hard copy, makes this feel like a second rate experience.

For the record, I persevered with this item because I do like B Maitland's work and his progress as a polished author.

Characters are imperfect and likeable, plot progresses well with a twist at the end you are not likely to guess, and the writing does not get in its own way. Overall, a very good book. The typos are very distracting. I hope they are just a Kindle thing and will be corrected.

I do wish that when there are books of any genre, written as a series, they would have a sequential number listed. It's sometimes difficult to have to plow through things to find which book is in what order. Sometimes the listing is there for certain books, sometimes not and consistency would be good for all books in a series.

On to another Maitland books review --- These are extremely well done and I really enjoyed reading this suspenseful story. The series just keeps getting better and better, the characters are fleshed out more and the story line in this was very well thought out.
