UPDATE: After using this fingerprint reader daily for over a month, I can report that it has, quite amazingly, been no less than 100% accurate in recognizing my fingerprint. I'm so astonished by this, that sometimes I try to scan a finger that I have not registered (trained it to recognize), just to see if it's working. It appears to be working fine, as every time I scan an "unregistered" finger, it correctly denies access. I even have friends try to scan their fingerprints, and it (correctly) denies them. I can't understand why anyone would give this device less than 5 stars, unless maybe they didn't follow the instructions. For reference, my system is running Windows 7 (64-bit) with all the latest patches.
I like the construction; it's nice and heavy, metal, and doesn't move around when you're using it. Before I bought this I spent a bit of time trying to decide if I'd prefer a single-touch model over the slide type. The other one was more expensive and I went with this one, but having used it for a couple years now I think if I were to buy another I'd go for the single-touch version. This one is pretty accurate, but there are times (more often than I expected) when my hands are full and I end up having to try multiple times because I can't get the angle just right.
INSTALL: Works flawlessly with WINDOWS 10. Installation was extremely easy. Step by step instructions and updated drivers (32/64 bit) can be downloaded from the helpful support page: [...]
Build Quality: EXCELLENT
Scanner: 500 dpi. Scratch resistant coating similar to Gorilla Glass
Base: Aluminum. Nice weight. Front & Rear full length rubber foot pads keep it in place during use.
Footprint: 2.75 inches X 1.75 inches X 0.7 inches.
USB cord: non-detachable, 6' length.
Computer logon: No need to navigate away from the PIN logon field. Just scan your finger and you're in.
Password Manager: Roboform integration is easy, but obviously you'll need to purchase the full-version.
Giving up all security in my profession and level of network access was also not a possibility. Try repeatedly typing complex very long passwords all day long with only one hand - it is VERY time consuming and frusterating just to unlock a workstation.
Enter the Verifi P2000. I went out on a limb and ordered this brand based on some very good Amazon reviews. I was not disappointed. This scanner literally saved me HOURS of time every day just authenticating to different systems, password databases, etc.
Well, note that I forgot to write my review - that was early 2013. It has been over two and a half years and I can report it literally works as well as the day I bought it. What's worse (or better speaking to quality) - I have literally only ever run a lint-free micro cloth with the LCD screen cleaner a couple of times to clean it in all that time. I have had it plugged into the same USB3 pluggable brand externally powered hub since I first plugged it in running on Windows 7 64bit.
I hated the "Fingerprint" login screen so I even figured out how to change one small registry branch of keys permisions and statically set one set of values at every login to match my login ID, so that now upon locking or login it actually shows "MYuserID" vs "Fingerprint" and behaves exactly as if I am manually logging in and unlocking. I use multiple fingers with what I would gauge as being approximately 98% accurate over 2.5 years - very seldom do I ever have to rescan my finger a second time, it really has been that accurate.
I am actually writing this review because I have returned and am again having issues with my tendon transplant hand so may have to get another one and am elated to see that the exact model is still available with what appears to be no major changes - don't fix it if it aint broke and mine definitely aint broke! :)
Only annoyance is that sometimes Windows makes a "USB device disconnected" noise every once in a while. This is solved by going to Device Manager > Biometric Devices > AuthenTec > Properties > Power Management and DISABLING the checkbox "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
