Here is a comparison of three different light therapy lamps. The little Circadian Optics, the globe Miroco, and the Verilux Happy Light LED Lumi. All are very effective in lifting autumn moodiness. The differences have more to do with light range and comfort.
The little square Circadian is a source of piercing light that you must keep no further than 6-8”away from your face. Mine had an annoying, intermittent flicker. Thirty minutes hunched over the Circadian was ample for mood elevation.
The Miroco is larger with a slightly gentler light. Again, however, distance needs to be kept at 8” or you will lose effectiveness.
Now, the Verilux. The light is extremely bright, which means you can relax back in your chair a bit and still get an effective treatment. I have it perched on a music sheet stand and can maneuver the light to a higher, optimal position.
I’ll be keeping the Verilux and returning the other two.

There are many examples of products with misleading marketing or advertising but when it comes to representing safety, I have little tolerance. Verilux is one of (if not the) market leader in therapy lights - at least on Amazon. The company claims this product to be UV-free and I bought it based partly on that representation because there is a history of cataracts and macular degeneration in my immediate family and UV light is known to be an environmental factor that can contribute to developing these conditions.Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2021
I received the product today and see on the box two footnotes to the product's claims of "10,000 Lux" and being "UV Free" I've attached photos showing the disclaimers. The Lux misrepresentation is less concerning to me but nonetheless, the fact that you have to place the light within 6 inches of one's eyes, means basically no-one will receive the claimed 10,000 Lux, at least after trying the light once or twice. It's just too bright and therefore impractical (and possibly bad for your eyes).
The second misrepresentation is more concerning to me. The claim of being UV-free is qualified in the footnote by stating that it meets IEC UV safety standards, which quantifies "acceptable" levels of UV radiation. This implies the product is not in fact UV-free - otherwise why qualify the statement at all? The manufacturer could add the additional reassurance separately that the device meets this standard.
This may sound nit-picky but why bother making definitive claims and then qualifying them? It damages the company's credibility in the areas of both effectiveness and safety - basically the two most important aspects of the product for me. And it has made me decide to return the product and do some more research.
