I would give it 5 stars if it didn't over heat, but nonetheless, it's a great device.
Also, here's a protip: When purchasing this, use a sim card from an older 4G LTE VZW Plan that has unlimited data. Your hotspot will have unlimited data and work with that card. VZW isn't happy about that though, but its completely allowed.
I am a pilot. I use this in hotels wherever I go so that I don't have to endure the slow or quirky internet they have.
A large battery pack is available here on Amazon. The battery that comes with it can run it for a few hours of constant use or a day on standby.
I use the sim card from my verizon 4g phone to get unlimited data on the unit because of my unlimited phone data plan. (Rumor has it that if you abuse the unlimited data you will see a huge bill or be disconnected.) (iPhone 4s sim did not work with this unit)
My device tends to get warm/hot when doing extended heavy downloads like Netflix. If it's in a cool place as I download all will be well as long as its fully charged and running on the USB power adapter that comes with it. It will be hottest if you are streaming Netflix off the battery in an area of weak signal.
If it gets too hot it will freeze and to reboot it you will need to remove the battery. (A Firmware update might fix this someday)
Overall, it works. I use it for part time internet on the road. The amazon price saves you over a hundred dollars.
It has an port for connecting an external antenna which I also use to get a better signal. Unless you are in wide open country the signal is quickly lost and it will not go over even small hills.
There is also a problem with the 4620 losing the network information for any PC's that it has created a session and issued an IP address using DHCP. When this happens, which is multiple times during the day, the battery must be removed and the 4620LE must be rebooted. Bad code from Novatel but once you buy their hotspot from a reseller like Verizon or Amazon the user is on their own - completely.
I decided to work around the defects and avoid the refurbished model. The one I had did the basics ok. But every month my bill went up as the reported data usage up went even though I was frantically cutting back on usage. Verizon didn't believe me and insisted I pay the full bills.
So I got a refurbished one and my bill has never been above a 1/3 of the bills I was getting before. But Verizon wouldn't give me a refund. Someone worked with me for days trying to figure out what they imagined I had done to run up the big bills. She could not come up with a reason. But still she denied me a refund. Her job was to prove me wrong. She failed. It made no difference.
Now the refurbished model has gone down hill. It always got 5 bars. Not it gets four. The unit sits in my wife's office, and my laptop got three -- which was good enough. Both are in the same place, and now my laptop supposedly gets two -- but as often as not I have to go sit in my wife's office even to read e-mail.
We rarely lost the signal before -- now we do 4-5 times a day that we know about. But this doesn't show on my wife's computer or mine. I have to infer from the complete lack of response.
June 7, 2013. I still have a year on my contract and get dropped all the time. Connection is so bad that many pages never download fully -- I have blanks where photos, etc. should be.Read more ›
When I first got the Jetpack it would toggle between 3G and 4G depending on where I was in the house. I had to order an antenna to boost the signal but the connecting cord was too short so I took the cord to a local computer and electronics store and had them make me a 20 foot extension. This allowed me to place the antenna on my roof and maintain a consistant 4G signal. Now the internet speed is good enough to stream Youtube and Hulu but the only problem I have now is the limited data plan. You don't realize how much data streaming video uses until you are paying for each megabyte.
Another great feature of this devise is that you can hook it up to an older desktop that has no WiFi capabilites to provide internet. The tricky part is downloading the software to the computer so it can connect to the jetpack. That software exists online only so you have to save it to a thumbdrive on another computer and than install it on the desktop.
One drawback is that once in a while the device will go dormaint while you are using it for no reason. Takes a few seconds to reconnect again. Also, the battery will burn out fairly quickly if you constantly leave it charging.
All in all though, I am happy that I have internet with this jetpack. My only other options were through a satellite dish or the telephone cable. My neighbors informed me that neither of which are very good.
