The drill bit and the tap, cut into 1/8th in bar steel, with absolutely no issue. You need to know two things in order for this to work properly. 1) Use "Cutting Oil", to keep the drill bit from over heating, and dulling the tip. (It was also make cutting through steel, much faster.) 2) Hand turn the screw tap! (If you try to use a drill to force the tap, then it WILL break!) Also, use "Cutting Oil", on the tap while making your threads.

If you have a hole or two to tap these Vermont combo sets might get you through. They are not quality taps though and are not up to tapping lots of holes in heavy steel.

After 5 holes the 1/4 bit sheared off despite using plenty of cutting fluid, aligning the tap in a drill press, and not using excessive force.

The 5/16 tap cuts extremely poorly and requires and excessive amount of force to cut, never seen a tap like this.

The 1/2 tap is the best of three I purchased; however, it still doesn't not cut well.

If you're looking to tap several holes in steel buy high quality American made taps from Irwin or McMaster-Carr.

It was good to go to a new tap. Got so tired of struggling with an old dull one. This one cut right through the steel like butter right up to the point where it broke. How disappointing, It broke on the third job. Lasted less than 30 minutes. Don't think I'll get another.

Only used one time so far but drilled 10 1" - 2.5" deep holes in aluminum. Drill bit worked great as well as the tap, no issues. Note: cutting fluid was used as well as a drill press for the holes.
