Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up–These 19 poems celebrate fathers and their role in families. Most of the selections are written from an adult perspective, as the narrators look back to childhood and remember all that their dads were and did and how much is owed to them. Sentimental in tone, the overriding message is of love, appreciation, and respect for a father who was always there–strong, faithful, and dependable. Illustrations of loving, multicultural families are drawn in muted tones on beige backgrounds, complementing the hushed, reverent tone. Collections with more child appeal include Myra Cohn Livingston's Poems for Fathers (Holiday, 1989; o.p.), Mary Ann Hoberman's Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers (Turtleback, 1993), In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall (Lee & Low, 2000), and John Micklos's Daddy Poems (Boyds Mills, 2003).–Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

From the Inside Flap

Fathers. With stubborn love and sage advice, they provide a special guidance that is always in demand and never out of style. Whether we are age two, twelve, twenty, or beyond, there is security in knowing we can always call on Dad. This collection of poetry will be cherished and enjoyed by all families who wish to celebrate fathers and the incomparable roles they play in our lives.
In Verses for Dad's Heart, Steven Layne and Gail Klinger create a seamless blend of verse and illustration that is both accomplished and inspirational. These poems cross the boundaries of age, race, and gender and honor the heroes closest to home--our dads.
