It had gotten so bad that I would avoid using it at all costs, even though it is far more powerful than my tablet. That's where this PNY CS1311 SSD comes in. The price was nice at just under $60 for the 240 GB model, and the measured performance was arguably the highest among the competition. First of all, I did not use the Acronis software code that came with the device. I always start fresh whenever I can, and Windows 10 makes that process easier than ever, but you must be running Windows 10 on your old hard drive for this to work: - Backup the files you want to keep on OneDrive, a USB, or an external hard drive if you can. - Download Windows 10 and create an install disc/USB. - Switch out the HDD for the SSD and boot up from the install media. - When it asks for the product key, click "I don't have a product key". - Once Windows 10 goes online, it will see that it's the same system and activate automatically. The Samsung EVO 850 comes with software that helps you test your drive, keeps track of its age, and automatically changes settings in Windows to get the most out of the SSD. The PNY has none of that, but I don't think most users would really miss it. It also doesn't come with any cables or brackets, which is standard, but it does include a spacer for those that may need one. Although this may be one of the prettiest computer components I have ever seen, where the PNY really shines is its speed. According to PNY, this drive should deliver up to 550MB/s in sequential reading, and 520MB/s in sequential writing (550/520 in shorthand, higher numbers are better for both). In user tests, the Samsung usually performs right on the mark, but the Crucial seems to have occasional problems according to its reviewers. The PNY CS1311, on the other hand, often outperforms its own benchmarks in both my tests and the tests done by other reviewers (attached image). This model only comes with a 3 year warranty, so if the Samsung EVO 850 is a comparable price I would buy the Samsung for its 5 year coverage. However, SSDs are known for their reliability, so do what feels right to you. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I would absolutely recommend this drive to anyone that I like, and the Crucial to anyone I don't. I will update later on if anything changes. On some older systems, the Serial ATA interface may be set up in "Legacy" or "IDE" mode (mine was). But, I learnt a very important lesson about cloning software by installing other SSD's. I find myself comfortable using "Macrium Reflect" for cloning, which free, very very easy to use & very fast. All you have to do is connect the new SSD with the computer with a SATA cable, run the software & about 10 clicks :P. BTW, read speed of this drive is very impressive. I had good communications with seller

Never could get this SSD to be recognized in the computer. Talked to Vertex support and they said it was probably defective. No longer any support for the drive as it had been out of production for some time and Vertex 3 was the current model. I had good communications with seller. He said it formatted fine for him, but credited my Amazon Account and said just trash the drive. I did, but not before opening it up, to see what the inside of an SSD looked like!

This was my intro to SSDs. It took a while to get it all installed with the operating system and a while to get my computer to look in the right place for programs, files, etc.

That was two weeks ago. Yesterday it went belly up. I figured it was something I had done. I got on the OCZ forum and they made suggestions, all to no use. The problem was not with me, the problem is with the drive.

I am not going to ask for a replacement. I'm sending it back to Amazon and will purchase a different brand. I have no interest in giving them a second chance. Having said that, there seem to be too many issues with SSds in general. Methinks the technology is not quite mature for prime time, though the potential is great and I'm sure within five years or so the spinning hard drives will go the way of the CRT monitor.

Anyway, two thumbs down for this OCZ solid state drive.

I am writing this review to make people aware of these SSD drives - forget about the speed, people - safety/reliability comes first!
i bought mine in january, and after installing it in my new Lenovo laptop, i was a happy owner of this Vertex drive, until 3 weeks later, when it abruptly died. No life in it and all my data was lost.
I called OCZ - got my RMA - and sent the drive back. Got a replacement.
Then other problems emerged. Computer hanged quite a lot (could be windows, who knows - i am writing this from my mac which never has given me any problems). And then regularly this error message. HDD0-initialization error. Did some reading online on it - its not clear what that comes from, but it is related to the SDD/drive as the problem is not there with the original mechanical drive. Problems with this replacement got worse over time - and now this drive has died too.
The 2nd drive lived longer than the first one by about 1-2 weeks. So definitely an improvement...
But to be serious: this is unacceptable. These drives are a complete joke and not fit for sale. And i am going to be asking my money back. This is a worthless product. It has cost me so much time now - i have lost data, and the so called speed improvements are useless if you have such unreliability.
I will update this review once i get more information - but for now - its been a complete disappointment.
UPDATE: What bothers me is that there is still no explanation from OCZ for this reliability issue - Ive had USB thumbsticks which NEVER die. This is not normal. I have asked OCZ several times for an explanation but they NEVER responded except to initiate the RMA process. Ridiculous. I will not use these drives if i cant understand what causes them to crash or not.

was a fast drive, but after about a year or so it crashed. I have had this problem with several ocz and had to do warranty replacement. Not impressed.
