The Vertical Loom is designed primarily for large tapestries and rugs requiring two harness control. The configuration permits practical viewing of the work as it progresses. Uses minimum floor space. Permits a practical accessibility to all areas of the work. It can be constructed quite simply and with minimum expense. Ideal for related weaving and textile techniques: Tapestries, Navajo Weaving, any warp weighted weaving, Sprang and Bobbin Lace.
This book has EXACTLY what we have been looking for. It gives precise measurements and supplies needed for a whole range of sizes. (I wanted a loom to be able to hold a large tapestry, not just a small table loom.) The drawings are easy to read and very accessible.
The book also is very informative in its description of the technology, if you will, of weaving on this type of vertical loom. (Which the author says is used not only with tapestry weaving, but also with lace making.) I have learned much about different heddle techniques and warping techniques.
I am not sure the book would be as accessible for a true beginner. As I said, I have some weaving experience. I did have to really concentrate and focus to get the information. My husband is very mechanically oriented and he understood the drawings very easily. He was very impressed with them. He did have to explain some of the things to me before I could understand. So, it may not be for the mechanically challenged or novice weaver. However, it is perfect for me! I can't wait to get going!
